Paulding County Parks Board meet For Annual Meeting

The Parks Board met on January 15.

The big project this year will be at 5-Span near Junction with a new dock being put in and the area cleaned up.

Steve Sprow talked about Rochester Park. He would like to see the entrances changed at the New Rochester Park. He would like to see steps down to the river, but the state has said they don’t see the need. He is working to get back on this with Senator Rob Portman.

Glenn Troth talked about the 16 or 17 miles of canal loch areas. These are in Paulding County and he wants to develop a plan that is more than just mark the trails. A few people do not know what is going on with these parks. Troth stated that most don’t quite know what is the parks and what is neighboring property. Two or three hundred thousand dollars would certainly help be able to make signage, maps and setting up camp sites that would be a tremendous boon to the county for people who want to camp here and use the facilities that are available. Troth also stated that the County Commissioners have been incredible with helping in this endeavor. President William McKinley was a boat man on the canal according Troth’s history reading. It’s clear that more can be done.

Lori Manon said that our small area played a huge part in setting up northwest Ohio. She is afraid that as generations come and go, land and history will be lost and what happened. She wanted everyone to be aware that New Rochester was actually the county seat at one time. Now it is a fantastic place that can be used by the public.

Linda Hodges, Treasurer, read off the names of the officers. The people were in favor of keeping the existing officers. Officers are Lori Manon, President; Linda Hodges, Treasurer; Pam Boatright, Vice President; and Judy Copsey, Secretary.

Hodges said that on April 6 there will be a 50/50 drawing and Friends of the Parks will also have a Spring Fundraiser at Paulding Eagles. At that time they will be hosting a raffle for the new kayak. She also said that if you would like tickets you can talk with Linda Hodges or Lori Manon and they will get you connected. Manon also encouraged everyone to like their Facebook page.

Commissioner Mark Holtsberry stated that he is a big advocate of the Parks District. He believes it seriously helps the quality of life in the county.

Hodges stated the Parks Board meets every third Wednesday each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Business Innovation building on the county courthouse square. They would love for people to input and help. All donations to the Friends of the Parks are 501c3 tax deductible.
