2019 JOURNAL GAZETTE PAULDING COUNTY SPELLING BEE

Ashley Shepherd, Director of Gifted Services for Western Buckeye ESC, announces that the 2019 Journal Gazette Paulding County Spelling Bee will be held on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. in the WT Payne Elementary Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public.

Ten contestants representing Paulding County schools, grades 4-8, will compete for the honor of representing the county in the Journal Gazette Regional Spelling Bee presented by STAR Financial Bank on March 9, 2019. The Regional Spelling Bee will be held in the Purdue Fort Wayne Rhinehart Recital Hall at 10:00 a.m. The winner of the Regional contest will go on to compete in the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.

Individual school champions are:

Antwerp Elementary School: Keira Spyker, Grade 4

Antwerp Middle School: Madisyn Peters, Grade 6

Christian Home Educators of Paulding County: Trina Wiegand, Grade 7

Divine Mercy Catholic School: Caleb Cox, Grade 5

WT Grover Hill Elementary School: Jarrett Jewell, Grade 6

Paulding Elementary School: Olivia Franklin, Grade 5

Oakwood Elementary School: Max Stork, Grade 6

Paulding Middle School: Sarah Wong, Grade 7

WT Payne Elementary School: Alicia Bahena, Grade 5

Wayne Trace Junior High School: Josh Sheeton, Grade 8

Mr. Doug Grooms, Special Services Coordinator for Van Wert City Schools will be the Pronouncer. Judges for the Spelling Bee are Mr. Joe Linder, Principal, Divine Mercy Catholic School, Mr. Kevin Wilson, Principal, WT Grover Hill Elementary, and Mr. Tim Manz, Director of Curriculum and Testing, Wayne Trace Local Schools. Mr. Paul Jones, Principal at WT Payne Elementary will prepare the physical arrangements for the Spelling Bee.

The Antwerp Exchange Bank and the Antwerp VFW Post #5087 are sponsoring the awards for the event, which include cash awards, gift cards, trophies for the champion and runner-up, and medallions for all the contestants.

Contestants are reminded to report to the WT Payne Elementary School Library at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, with an alternate date of Thursday, February 7th.
