A Decade of Success: Hicksville School District Celebrates Milestones

All third grade students and new students to Hicksville get sorted in the Annual House Sorting Ceremony, held at the end of the first week of school. Students are randomly sorted into one of the four houses; Amitie, Coragem, Exemplar, or Setia.

On January 8, 2024 Hicksville School District marked the 15th anniversary of moving into our state-of-the-art building and the 10th anniversary of launching the groundbreaking Hicksville Initiative. Over the years, the district has become a leader in northwest Ohio for educational practices, fostering a positive environment, setting high expectations, and engaging both teachers and students in an effective and successful learning community.

Hicksville School District ranks within the top 10% of school districts in the state of Ohio for the past several years. The Ohio Department of Education awarded Hicksville School District with 5 stars, the highest ranking possible for Ohio school districts. In 2022, Hicksville Elementary was recognized as a United States Department of Education National Blue Ribbon School with an Exemplary High Performing School distinction.

The Hicksville Initiative, which was launched a decade ago, has been the driving force behind the district’s success. This innovative program aims to empower students with essential skills, ensuring they not only excel academically but also develop into well-rounded individuals ready to face the challenges of the future. Hicksville students, guided by this initiative are expected to demonstrate 24 Hicksville Essentials on a daily basis. Students are also provided opportunities for competitions throughout their school experience to help practice and relate these qualities to experiences beyond the classroom.

Some of the most popular essentials include maintaining eye contact when speaking to others, having good sportsmanship win or lose, actively participate in class every day, and show pride in your school.

“The Hicksville Initiative has been a game-changer for us. It’s not just about academic excellence; it’s about nurturing the whole student. We want our students to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, and contributors to their communities,” says Keith Countryman, Superintendent of Hicksville School District.

Central to the success of the district is the unwavering commitment of its teachers, students, and staff. Hicksville educators are dedicated to instilling a love for learning, while students are encouraged to explore their passions and contribute positively to their community. The staff, equally committed, plays a pivotal role in creating a supportive and enriching environment for all.

One distinctive feature of the Hicksville School District is its unique house system, comprising of four houses: Amitie, Coragem, Espemplare, and Setia. Each student, third grade and above, belongs to one of these houses, creating a sense of belonging and camaraderie. Despite the divisions, the district proudly emphasizes that all students make up one ACES family.

“The house system is not just about competition; it’s about fostering collaboration and building a sense of community within the school. Our students and staff belong to different houses, but they are all part of the larger ACES family, working together towards common goals,” explained Countryman.

The school’s commitment to excellence is not confined to academics alone. The Hicksville School District ensures that students are well-prepared for life beyond the classroom, instilling in them a sense of responsibility, leadership, and empathy. Seniors are required to complete a senior project of their choice. This year some of the projects include upgrading the shot and disc area of the school’s athletic facilities, raising money for a local scholarship fund, becoming a basketball official, and many students are using the opportunity to create their own small businesses.

As Hicksville looks back on its remarkable journey, it stands as a testament to what can be achieved with a strong vision, dedicated educators, and enthusiastic students. The next chapter promises to be even more exciting as the district continues its mission to provide a holistic education for all.
