MILITARY HISTORY IN PAULDING COUNTY

Guy Fleming Heazlet was born November 30, 1890 in Omaha, Nebraska. Son of Perry, born March of 1851 in Ohio and Mary Eliza (White) Heazlet, born 1856 in Ohio. This couple was married October 25, 1881 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. The Heazlet family moved to Paulding County in 1892. 

By 1900, the Heazlet couple, plus children, Edith J., Guy F. and Elsie M. were living in Crane Township. Perry was engaged in farming. On June 11,1908, daughter Edith married a fella named William J. Gordan in Paulding.

Born in 1909. By 1910, the Heazlet family, Perry, Mary and Elsie were still living in Crane Township. Guy had moved on his own, but unclear of where he went, but he was working for his father. 

By 1917, war was looming in Europe. On June 5, 1917, Guy registered for the draft at the Crane Township precinct. He was single, short in height, medium build, gray eyes and sandy hair. He joined the National army out of Paulding,

On April 28, 1918 he was assigned to 11th Company, 3rd Training Battalion, 158th Depot Brigade and served until May 3, 1918. Then he was assigned to Company F., 329th Infantry, 83rd Division and shipped out to France June 12, 1918. The ship’s name was the “Anchises”. Shipped out from Hoboken, New Jersey. He was assigned to Company L., 101st Infantry and served as a Private seeing action at St. Mihiel, and Muese-Argonne defensive sector, and was wounded in action, October 24, 1918. 

He served until December 9, 1918. He was Honorably Discharged January 27, 1919 with a claim of 20% disability. Guy met and married a gal named, Eva J. Stuart July 26, 1919 in Paulding. 

By 1920, Guy and Eva J. were living in Crane Township and engaged in farming and Guy became a school teacher. 

On May 22, 1921 a daughter, Edith Celestia, was born. A son, Robert F., was born July 10, 1923, (he served in World War Two). A daughter, Ruby, was born November 27, 1927. 

This household employed a housekeeper, Mytle F. Miller. By 1930, the Heazlet family was living in Crane Township. Guy was working as a farmer. By 1940, the Heazlet family had moved to Main Street in Cecil, Ohio. Guy still teaching at school. In 1942, Guy, at the age of 51, had to register for the World War Two draft. 

By 1950, Guy and Eva were empty nesters and still living on Main Street, Cecil. Guy was a Junior High teacher at Paulding High School. In 1951, Guy discovered that he had cancer. And in February of 1952, Guy went to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Ft. Wayne and on March 28, 1952, at the age of 62 he passed away from Lymphatic Leukemia. 

Guy taught school for more than 40 years. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church in Cecil and burial in Rochester Cemetery in Section 3, Row 4. His wife passed away in 1986 and was buried alongside Guy.
