Penny For Your Thoughts

Did you know that there are approximately 68,000,000 dogs currently owned as pets in the U.S? That’s 68 million dog names.

Of course when I was growing up, we always had a dog. We lived with grandma and grandpa and grandpa always named a dog, Rover.

We had Rover #1, Rover #2 and Rover # 3.

We all loved our Rovers, but living in the country it was hard to say where our Rover would go visit.

The first Rover got caught killing someone’s sheep and got us into a big mess. That Rover had to be secured on our property. Sheep are pretty expensive.

Then we somehow obtained another dog and named him Rover. We lived on a country road, with few cars going by. This Rover liked to chase cars and one day his chasing days came to a halt.

Then there was Rover #3. This one was a black dog who liked to bite. Even if he knew you he would still bite you.

One day #3 jumped on me, knocking me down and took a bite of my leg.

I wasn’t that old or big, but I was so mad at that dog that I jumped on him, biting his ear. Rover cried and I got into trouble for getting even with him.

After I was married and had my children, we always had a dog.

In the 60s The Flintstones were popular on TV so we named our dog Dino. Dino was so cute and would follow us wherever we would go.

At that time we did not have to keep our dogs tied up so Dino was free to visit other dogs around Scott, Ohio.

Other dogs we had were chihuahuas; one named Leroy and another one named Ralph. All of our dogs were our pets and part of our family.

One time we bought a wiener dog and named him Brownie. Brownie had the opportunity one time to make some other little Brownies.

Well our Brownie had no interest in lady wiener dogs and all he did was eat his supposed girl friends food and play with her toys. Brownie lived to be 21 years old.

Since I downsized and moved, I have a Ragdoll kitty named Honey. Honey is my best friend and follows me all around.

Getting back to dog names….. Naming a dog can be a big decision. The most popular dog names are: Daisy and Bella for girls and Charlie and Max for boys.

Lots of people will name a dog after a loved one or a former pet. Some of these are Grandma, Paw-paw; or Baby Doll.

Some celebrities name their pooches after other stars. Jennifer Garner has a beautiful Labrador named Martha Stewart, while one celebrity named her dog, Jim Carey.

If you are a foodie, you may want to name your pet, Muffin, Omelet, Butterball or Cookie.

There are lots of unique dog names. Some are: Dodge; Tesla, Bentley, Chevy and Jeep.

You may want to name your new pet after a politician such as Barack; Trump, Kennedy or Nixon.

This has been so much fun writing this column and researching names. Hmmm. If I ever get a puppy, I think I will name him West Bend, Bryce, Chrystal or Angel!

Do you have a dog? Is your dog your best friend? Does it have a unique name? Let me know and I will give you a Penny for Your Thoughts.
