Paulding High School and Paulding Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) once again collaborated to hold a Community Service Workday at the Black Swamp Nature Center. Over 350 students in grades 9-12 from Paulding High School and their teachers braved the cool fall weather to make a big difference in their local community. This is the second community service day that has been done by the students.
No task was too big or small for the students as they completed many projects that they and their fellow community members can enjoy for many years to come. One of the most notable projects is the installation of a three-hole disc golf course throughout the grounds of the Black Swamp Nature Center. Students helped to prep everything for the installation of the disc golf holes from prepping holes for the bases to painting signs to mark the holes. This project was funded thanks to donations to the Friends of the Black Swamp Nature Center through the Paulding County Area Foundation.
Other projects completed by the students and staff include: spread mulch on trails and around landscaping, cut new trail for access to Old Meadow Trail, cut back cedars and invasive vines, trim trails, prune around building, remove invasive woody plants, plant bulbs, attach tree ID tags, pick up litter, remove flaking paint from front sign, relocate around 30 LARGE landscape rocks from brush area to building, pull teasel weeds and roots, mount 4 “no gun” signs, mount 2 bat boxes, stain large dock and bench, remove screens and clean windows in building, dust items in building, move picnic table to pavement, mulch front sign, watered new native garden, moving brush piles.
