Paulding Library Wins 2018 Teens’ Top Ten Book Giveaway

Library Director, Susan Pieper, looks over the new “top ten” books for teens.

The Paulding County Carnegie Library (PCCL) has won the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) 2018 Teens’ Top Ten giveaway. Funded by a grant provided by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, these new titles will not only further enrich the library’s teen collection but will also attract teens to the library.

The Teens’ Top Ten is a “teen choice” list, where teens nominate and choose their favorite books of the previous year. Nominators are members of teen book groups in 16 school and public libraries around the country. Nominations are posted on the Thursday of National Library Week, and teens across the country are encouraged to read as many nominees as they can over the summer. Readers ages twelve to eighteen will then vote online between August 15 and Teen Read Week to select their favorites. The ten titles with the most votes become the year’s Teens’ Top Ten. “The fifty titles will be distributed between all library Paulding library locations”, shares Susan Pieper, Library Director. “Teen fiction authors address many subjects and issues facing today’s teens. Death of a family member, substance abuse, bullying, romance and more subjects are weaved into well-written stories. Teens enjoy reading fiction where there is a protagonist that survives a situation or resolves a conflict by the end of the book. Some of the resolutions are unexpected, and like life, not all have happy endings.”

The mission of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) is to support library staff in alleviating the challenges teens face, and in putting all teens ‒ especially those with the greatest needs ‒ on the path to successful and fulfilling lives.
