Highway Patrol Investigating Death of Individual Found Along US 30 in Van Wert County

Antwerp Individual found to be the victim.

sheriff police badgeTully Township – The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Van Wert Post is investigating the death of John M. Chilcote, age 58, of Antwerp, Ohio.

On Friday, October 9th, at 4:31pm a passerby observed Mr. Chilcote lying along the north side of US 30 near a culvert. Troopers from the Van Wert Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the scene and located the victim lying beside the culvert. Responding Trooper’s found Mr. Chilcote to be unresponsive and he was pronounced dead at 5:40pm by Deputy Van Wert County Coroner Dr. Matthew Miller.

At this time evidence indicates that Mr. Chilcote succumbed due to natural causes while working to clear a drainage tile along US 30 near a field that he farmed.

The Van Wert Post was assisted by the Van Wert County Coroner’s Office, the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Office of Investigative Services, the Paulding and Van Wert County Sheriff’s Offices, and Brickner Ambulance Service.

The incident remains under investigation.
