A letter from France
Evacuation Hospital 13
A.P.O. 783
Amex, France March 31, 1919
[Another letter from Paul Cussen to my grandmother’s first cousin Florence Manson, This letter was written in the Duchess’s Castle in France.]
“My dearest cousin your letter received this evening and will hasten to reply, as I find myself as busy as you were and forget to answer.
“Now, say don’t you offer me any flattery. Don’t you know that I’m so old that my hair has turned gray and my face has wrinkles as deep as the creek that runs furthest from you house. You won’t do it any more will you?
“Well, Florence I just got back from a fourteen day furlough to the British Isles and dear such a time as I had. Tell your mama that I had a look into the mode of living that our dear grandpa and grandma had and oh how homesick I grew for it and how I would have loved to have been with them in their quiet little city with the rows of houses. A large tear in each eye as I stood from a high mountain on which was a large castle and gazed at the little city of Rajalack. The place was spotlessly clean and the people had sweet sad faces. How I could live always in old Ireland. I’ll tell you all about it when I get home.
“I had a grand letter from Aunt Mayme. They are both well.
“We have nearly finished our work here and I hope to be home before many moons.
“Well my dear I am busy so will close with love to all.
“Your Cousin Paul”
So thankful that my grandmother kept these letters and passed them on to my mom. I found these letters after my mom passed away.
