Archers Cruise to Route 49 Title

HICKSVILLE – Antwerp captured the Route 49 Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament championship on Friday with a 56-40 victory over Edgerton at Hicksville High School.

The Archers, who improved to 8-0 on the season with the victory, were led by Landon Brewer with 24 points and Carson Altimus chipped in 18 markers.

Reid Lichty chipped in seven points for the blue and white with Zaine McMichael posting six while Ben Savina connected on a free throw.

Scottie Krontz paced Edgerton with nine points while Maddox Baker and Cory Herman chipped in eight markers apiece.

Joel Walkup, Kellen Sanchez and Noah Weaver recorded five points apiece for the Bulldogs, who fall to 2-6 on the season.

The two squads played even through three quarters as Antwerp led 15-11 at the end of eight minutes of action before the Williams County squad cut the deficit to 24-22 at the intermission. The Archers then extended the margin to 39-33 at the end of three periods.

In the final period, Brewer scored eight points and Altimus added six to aid the Antwerp cause with the blue and white totaling 17 points in the period.

Antwerp outrebounded the Bulldogs 26-16 in the contest while the Archers had only ten turnovers compared to 15 for Edgerton. Brewer topped the blue and white on the boards with 11.

Antwerp’s junior varsity also was victorious, defeating the Williams County squad 27-20.
