On Tuesday, October 3rd, 8 students from the Paulding FFA attended District 4 Soils CDE in Tiffin, Ohio. All students that attend this event are split into 6 different groups and within those groups, about 2 members from the same school are with each other. One student will be judging for urban soil and the other one will be judging for rural soil. Each group starts at different spots, there are four different soil pits, a general knowledge test, and questions over a soil survey. When the students are at the pits, they judge the pit on the soil texture and structure, the slope, drainage class, and compaction. The urban team must answer questions about whether the soil is good for building and the rural team answers questions about how suitable the soil is for farming. The urban soils team placed 19th which was made up of Kobe Foor, Tyler Schlatter, Brooklyn Schlatter, and Tori Schlatter. The top competitor was Tyler Schlatter placing 60th individually out of 110 members. The rural soils team placed 13th which was made up of Brooke Kilgore, Jamy Hunt, Anna Clemens, and Sam Reinhard. The top finisher for the team was Jamy Hunt placing 22nd individually out of 108 members. Although none of the students will move on, we made great improvements. The chapter is still very proud of these students and all their hard work throughout the competition!
