Military History in Paulding County

Walter Edward Carlisle was born March 24, 1893 in Brighton, Lorain County, Ohio. The son of Joseph, born June 22, 1854 in Ross County, Ohio and Alice Liberty (Gaither) Carlisle, born August 31, 1854 in Pique County, Ohio. 

This couple was married in 1885.The birth of a son, Harry W., January 7, 1886, Laura Alice, May 30, 1888, Walter E., March 24, 1893, Pern Albert, May 1, 1895, Grace Irene 1898. 

By 1900, this family was living in Blue Creek Township, Walter was in school and Joseph was raising his family as a farmer. May 3, 1907, Walter’s brother, Harry W., died. He was buried in Dealey Cemetery, outside of Payne. 

By 1910, the Carlisle family was still living in Blue Creek Township living on Parker Road (not sure where this road is located). Joseph still farming, Walter had quit school, probably to help work the family farm. While working at the Tipton Elevator in Tipton, Ohio, Walter registered for the draft June 5, 1917. He went to the Blue Creek precinct and was listed as 5’8″ tall, slender build, gray eyes, brown hair and single. Walter met and married a gal named Delilah M. Hennick May 18, 1918 in Paulding. Walter was accepted to serve in the National Army out of Paulding, May 25, 1918. He served with 159th Depot Brigade, this was a training unit. He served until February 7, 1919, where he was Honorably Discharged. Walter’s brother Pern Albert, also registered for the draft June 5, 1917, out of the Haviland precinct. Pern was working at the Haviland Clay Works, married, tall medium build, light blue eyes, brown hair. Records show that he was not chosen. 

By 1920, Walter and Delilah were living in Paulding on Parker Pike. Walter was a salesman at a grocery store. A son, Walter S. was born January 9, 1920, followed by, Kenneth Wayne born 1921 and died the same year. Gerald Elden June 21, 1922, Mary A. May 24, 1924, Sela R. 1926, Garnett Mae November 26, 1927, and Raymond February 6, 1929. 

By 1930, Walter and family were living in Latty on Jefferson Street. Walter was a day laborer doing road repair work. A son Herbert Eugene was born in 1931 and died in 1932, Marvin Leroy born August 25, 1932. By 1935, the Carlisle’s had moved to Grover Hill. Children were born, Doris, January 21, 1936, followed by Laura Belle April 7, 1937 and Earl Rex born 1938 died in 1939. 

By 1940, Walter and Delilah, were still living in Grover Hill. On January 27, 1940, Walter’s father, Joseph, passed away, he was buried in Dealey Cemetery. 

During 1940, the Carlisle family moved to Paulding, living at 325 Sugar Street. Walter was working as a boiler man at the Sugar Beet factory in Paulding. In 1942, Walter at the age of 50, registered for World War Two draft. His two sons, Walter Sherman and Gerald Elden, living at home with Walter and Delilah, and working at the Sugar Beet factory, registered also. They both  served in World War Two.

January 4, 1944, Walter’s mother, Alice, passed away. She was buried with Joseph at Dealey Cemetery. On October 22, 1949, Walter passed away and was buried in Dealey Cemetery. On March 17, 1962, Delilah passed away and was buried with Walter at Dealey Cemetery. 

As my research expanded into this article, I realized I know two of Walter’s grandchildren, from two separate children, small world!
