New Haven Begins New Flag Day Tradition

City of New Haven is beginning a new tradition for National Flag Day.  The program will be held on Sunday, June 14, 2020 at 12:00 PM.  The program will include retiring the current flag and raising a new flag.

The program will be open to the public, but we will be following state protocol and social distancing guidelines.  Under Governor Holcomb’s stage 4 guidelines, the crowd must be limited to 250 people.  If you choose to attend, we encourage you to wear a facemask and to not congregate in one area.  It is strongly recommended that everyone stand six feet apart. To allow more community members to join us, we will live stream the event on the City’s Facebook page @NewHavenIN.

The City of New Haven is proud to partner with Stars for Troops for a new tradition. Stars for Troops is a nonprofit organization that collects flags to properly retire and dispose of them. They remove the embroidered stars are then package them to be passed along to service members and veterans that have defended our nation and what our flag stands for.

We will begin flag collections immediate after our flag ceremony on June 14, 2020.  Flag collection will go through our Independence Day celebration on July 4, 2020 at Schnelker Park.  Collection boxes will be located at City Hall and at the New Haven Community Center, then on July 4th we will move them to Schnelker Park.  At the end of the picnic, we will turn the flags over to Stars for Troop so they can properly retire and dispose of them.
