RaIders Keep Black Swamp Trophy

Wayne Trace wins the 2017 Black Swamp Trophy.

Wayne Trace senior Gabe Sinn catches the ball at the goal line to score.

Last year, the Raiders barely pulled off the win, and this year, before the game even started, Paulding hoped that it might end up a close game again.

Neither team was able to grab points in the first period. In the second quarter, Paulding fell apart. The Raiders ran all over the Panthers with a streak of run away scoring. It started with Trevor Speice with a 1 yard pass to Hunter Showalter. Next, Showalter’s run was left wide open, and he ran a 65 yard touchdown all the way from the Panther side of the field. Jake Kuhn was on the board next followed by Showalter once again. Kuhn then scored a fifth touchdown for the team, putting another nail in the Paulding coffin, and with the point after, brought the score to 0-35 for the half.

In the third period, the Raiders’ Speice passed a 17 yard ball to Gabe Sinn, catching it just inside the goal line.

CORRECTION: the article of the Black Swamp Bowl between Paulding and Wayne Trace football teams originally reported that Paulding Coach Tyler Arend was thrown out of the game. In truth he was not thrown out at all but rather an assistant coach. We apologize for the error and hope that through this the Paulding fans, parents, and everyone else can stand together and have excellent support for the team, players and coaches.

The fourth period was not a total failure as Paulding’s Fernando Garcia ran a 27 yard pass into the end zone with about 3:00 left on the clock for their first, and only touchdown of the night, making the final score 41-6.

This makes the 7th year in a row that the Raiders have held onto the Black Swamp Trophy. Congratulations to coach Mike Speice and the whole Wayne Trace team.
