Break Routine With New Adventures

Many of us are creatures of habit. Some of us go to the extreme of eating the same things daily. But having a routine is not necessarily a bad thing. We often benefit from routines because we can accomplish more, we can remember things easier, we can be more relaxed, and we can be more organized. Routines are also great ways to rear children because they involve consistency, which builds trust and expectations. Perhaps most importantly, routines give us a sense of comfort. However, if we don’t break out of our routines occasionally, we have a hard time accepting change, being flexible, and challenging ourselves. Besides, doing the same thing day in and day out can lead to boredom.

To avoid the risk of boredom, try something new once in a while. Is your inner artist begging to come out? Sign up for a painting class. Do you have a story waiting to be told? Seek local writing clubs. Would you like to try a new exercise program? Grab a friend and try it together. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to fly? Sign up for parachute jumping or something less risky, but still thrilling such as zip lining. Whatever you’ve dreamed about or have always wanted to try, don’t delay. Life is too short.

The following are a few reasons why trying new things is good for you.

1. Promotes growth. If you never try anything new, you may never know how much you are truly capable of. You may find out that you are really good at something you’ve always been afraid to try. By taking risks, you learn to conquer your fears and become a stronger person. You learn more about yourself.
2. Provides sense of accomplishment. Just trying something for the first time takes tremendous amounts of courage. Once you get past the first time, you have already succeeded. Over time, you may find that you master your new endeavor, building your self-esteem.
3. Builds anticipation. You have something to look forward to, which conquers boredom. You may find that you truly enjoy your new activity. However, you may try something for the first time and find it challenging. If so, give it some time. Even if you realize it simply isn’t for you, it’s worth finding out rather than wondering for the rest of your life because you had never tried it in the first place.
4. Introduces the like-minded. Trying something new gives you an opportunity to meet people with the same interests. You are likely to make new friends this way.
5. Develops new skills. Whenever we learn new things, we become stronger. Whether it is mentally or physically, continual learning helps us live more satisfying lives. We can always use new skills to our advantage.
Sure, breaking out of a routine and trying something new can be intimidating and uncomfortable. However, it can also be rewarding and something to look forward to. Now is the time to try something new. What are you waiting for?
