The Homes for Wounded Warriors Program broke ground on a home for U.S. Army Specialist Matthew Moeller on September 23, 2014. The home is located at the intersection of Camdenwood Drive and Genoa Court in New Haven. Both New Haven Mayor Terry McDonald and Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry were in attendance at Tuesday’s groundbreaking.
Moeller was seriously wounded while honorably serving his country in Afghanistan. The combat engineer was left 100% disabled after a roadside bomb detonated near him while he was on duty. Matthew, who is married with one child, currently lives with his family in a small town home that is not suitable for him due to his extensive physical injuries. Because of his disabilities, the financial hardship Matthew’s family is currently under, and the nature of his present unsuitable living arrangements, the Homes for Wounded Warriors Program has moved quickly to provide suitable housing for Matthew and his family right here in New Haven in the Bay Meadows edition.
According to Gary Marquardt, Project Manager for the Moeller home site, the Homes for Wounded Warriors Program is an Indiana based 501c3 organization that has one mission and that is to provide new or remodeled mortgage-free, custom-adapted homes to seriously wounded veterans. Unlike other like-minded programs, all staff members of the Homes for Wounded Warriors Program are volunteers.
How You Can Help: You, your family and/or your organization or business can help be a hero for Matthew and his family by supporting the Moeller Home Build. Approximately $67,000 is needed to complete the build, and thanks to generous sponsors and community partners, the program is more than half way towards meeting its goal.
