The 5-K is sponsored by the Payne Chamber of Commerce, which is a non-profit organization. The title of the event is a play on words: pain relief – Payne relief. The Chamber uses the funds they raise to pay for things to improve the community of Payne. A major expense every year is the American flags that are featured throughout the downtown area. The wind & weather are hard on the flags and we go thru 2 sets of flags per year. We feel patriotism is important and really appreciate what our military veterans have done, as well as those currently serving. We hear a lot of compliments about how nice the flags look.

Another consideration we have are the Christmas decorations supplied by the Chamber during the advent season. The ones we have are getting old and some have faded quite a bit. Sometime soon it will be a major expense to replace them.

Recently, the Chamber facilitated the demolition and removal of several downtown decrepit buildings that were a real eyesore and a safety hazard. I think most people would be quite surprised to know how much it costs to have this done. Many people in the community were very generous with donations to help with this project and that is the only way it was possible to get it done. Also, the project would not have gone forward without a buyer (Antwerp Exchange Bank) for the vacant lots. The Chamber still has a loan outstanding from this project.

The Chamber has 113 members at this time, but only a small handful are active in the organization. We welcome new ideas and more participation. Working together, it is surprising what we can accomplish.
