The Warriors began their tournament trek on Tuesday, March 4 at South Adams High school against Eastside. The boys basketball team was coming off a season record 15-6 and is hoping to make a good showing at Sectionals.

The game began with Eastside taking charge early, scaring the Woodlan fans, and doubling the Warriors first quarter score. This is not the first time Woodlan has been in this predicament and have managed to overcome the initial bout.

Coach Randall took the minute between the first and second to reorganize and get the boys focused on the game. The second quarter both teams scored well, but Woodlan did most of it. Some of the foul calls, appeared to tilt the game in the favor of the Dekalb county team. Jeffrey Jones had a technical called against him, but no one was quite sure of the reason. Kaden Gerig, on a 3 point basket, was pushed to the ground, falling on his back and yet no foul was called. Certainly it was an interesting first half. The first half ended with only a two point difference and Woodlan had pulled off a fantastic recovery.

Both the third and fourth quarters went to Woodlan for the most points, tying the game at the end of the third quarter. Momentum was strong for the Warriors in the fourth. Jaylin Bennett led the charge and the entire team followed suit. The Blazers could not stop Bennett from scoring if he received the ball under the basket. Grabbing the rebounds really helped Woodlan win the game 51-60

Score by Quarter:
Eastside: 18 16 10 7 = 51
Woodlan: 9 21 12 18 = 60

Eastside: Moughler 2, Springer 2, Dean 11, Renier 13, Leichty 16, Singer 7
Woodlan: White 8, Jones 8, Gerig 10, Hahn 11, Bennett 23

Woodlan goes on in Sectionals to play Churubusco on Friday at 6 pm at South Adams. Busco could be a challenge even though their 6-15 record doesn’t show it, with top players returning after injuries.
