Ohio Department of Transportation District 1

Winter Operations Update

The following is an update regarding snow and ice operations on state highways within the Ohio Department of Transportation District 1 which includes the counties of Allen, Defiance, Hancock, Hardin, Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert and Wyandot. This report is issued periodically during the winter months and as needed during snow and ice events.

snow plow-ODOT crews were out through the night. There are currently 98 crews operating on the highways within the eight-county area of ODOT District 1.

-Snow and ice conditions are being reported throughout northwest Ohio with blowing and drifting snow. Winds will remain a factor throughout the day.

-Snow is tapering off. Current temperatures are allowing crews to apply salt as they continue to plow.

-With colder temperatures this evening, crews will continue to work throughout the day and night to minimize icy pavement conditions. Motorists are cautioned to be aware of changing conditions.

-As plowing continues, motorists are asked to give plows plenty of room to work and be aware of the snow cloud which can occur when you pass a plow. The cloud can envelop you in total white-out conditions. When approaching an oncoming plow, provide as much room between it and you as possible, slow down and don’t panic should your visibility be temporarily reduced to zero.

-Some local county sheriff’s departments have travel advisories in place. Motorists should check with local departments on the status of travel in their county.

Additional facts:

-ODOT plow operators have been out in trucks on the highways plowing and salting during 26 of the last 28 days with little break between events.

-In a typical winter, ODOT uses 35,000 tons of salt to control snow and ice in the eight-county region of District 1. The district has already used 45,000 tons of salt this winter season.

-In an effort to stretch salt supplies, grits (small stone) is now being mixed with salt and applied to some secondary roadways to provide traction for vehicles.
