New Haven, Ind. \u2013 Governor Mike Pence stood with the Pond family as they unveiled the \u201cPhyllis J. Pond Memorial Highway\u201d sign in New Haven today. Two signs have been placed by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) designating U.S. 24 – from U.S. 30 east of New Haven to the Indiana\/Ohio State Line as the \u201cPhyllis J. Pond Memorial Highway.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThanks to Rep. Pond\u2019s efforts, today U.S. 24 has been transformed from a winding two-lane, rural highway to a new four-lane, limited access expressway that provides economic development opportunities from Fort Wayne to the Port of Toledo.\u00a0 The new roadway improves access and safety across northern Indiana and northern Ohio,\u201d said Governor Mike Pence.<\/p>\n
During the 2014 General Assembly, a concurrent resolution was passed to name an 11-mile portion of the new U.S. 24 after the late Rep. Phyllis J. Pond, who passed away in September 2013. She provided more than three decades of service in the Indiana House of Representatives.<\/p>\n
Governor Mike Pence also presented George Pond, Phyllis\u2019s husband, with the resolution. He also presented smaller versions of the memorial signs to son, William, and wife, Cami, of Fort Wayne; son, Doug Pond, of Indianapolis; and daughter, Jean Pond Grasmick, of Indianapolis.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs people travel the road and see the signs, it will bring a memory of Mom to so many.
\nShe truly loved the people of her district, her legislative colleagues and staff; and even this time last year could name every kindergarten student she had in 37 years of teaching. She was a legend for her sage understanding of the legislative process, the context and history of the issues and fairness for all sides. -\u201cTo the citizens of Indiana, thank you for bringing a lasting memory and smile to Northeast Indiana,\u201d said, Dr. William Pond.<\/p>\n
