Paulding County \u2013 Antwerp resident Nickolas A. Lewis joined Ohio\u2019s \u201cSaved by the Belt\u201d Club today after his safety belt saved him from sustaining life-threatening injuries. The crash occurred on U.S. 127 in Paulding County on January 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ohio State Highway Patrol Sergeant Joseph R. Sisco, Van Wert Post assistant commander, presented him with a \u201cSaved by the Belt\u201d certificate signed by Ohio Department of Public Safety Director Thomas J. Stickrath and Colonel Richard S. Fambro, Patrol superintendent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNickolas is a living testimony to the effectiveness of safety belts,\u201d Lieutenant Timothy P. Grigsby, Van Wert Post commander said. \u201cEveryone needs to buckle up every trip, every time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Provisional data from 2021 shows 565 people in Ohio were killed in traffic crashes where a safety belt was available, but not in use. For up-to-date statistics and information on seat belts, log onto the Patrol\u2019s Seatbelt Dashboard at www.SeatBeltDashboard.ohio.gov<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cSaved by the Belt\u201d Club is a joint effort by the Ohio Department of Public Safety and more than 400 Ohio law enforcement agencies. This club is designed to recognize people who have benefited from their decision to wear safety belts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
