Main and Daggett Street. I have never heard before about a flag pole in the middle of Main Street. I’m sure it was taken out early because that became SR 49 somewhere before 1930.

That right hand store was built about 1900 and was owned by Jerry Anspaugh. In 1911, Joe Carr had a grocery store and meat market on this corner till after WWII, but it had been remodeled a bit.

That next place was Warren Seslar’s garage, built in 1912, a very modern and up to date building. Notice the Texaco gas pump, I think that car on the left is of early 1920 vintage.

The next store after the garage was opened first by Alex Grant as a hardware then L. Smith and Son. bought it in 1908. They demolished it and built it as it is now in 1927. A little later on they became a Buick and Pontiac car dealer. As time went on, about the turn of the century, they were the oldest family owned Buick dealer in Ohio.

Before they went out of business, they had a hardware, sold kitchen equipment, sold farm equipment, new and used cars, all types of garage work was a big part in Antwerp’s progress.

Those last two buildings on the right were built in 1894. It started out as a grocery store, but after WWI became a restaurant there on the corner for years, and the one beside it was also a restaurant most of those years.

You can see by the poles that we had lights and phones by this time. So all of this together, I would say this picture was taken in the late 1920’s.

Take a good look at this corner picture, because next week’s photo is of the same corner, but at an earlier time.

See ya!

By: Stan Jordan This is the corner of S.
