The Permanently Repeal the Estate Tax Act would provide needed relief to farmers and small business owners in Ohio and across the country. In sectors that require high capital investments, like agriculture, families often have difficulty meeting tax requirements imposed by the estate tax because their liquid assets are much lower than the value of land, property, and equipment. In addition to the costs imposed at death, the estate tax also has a stifling economic impact beforehand due to the cost of life insurance and financial preparation needed to plan and comply with the tax.

“For too many small businesses and farmers, the death tax is a barrier that makes it difficult to pass on the fruits of their labor to future generations,” said Latta. “Not only that, there are real economic consequences as families are forced to take out costly insurance policies, sell off equipment or land, and reduce the size of their business or farm to ensure that they won’t be harmed by the estate tax in the future. In addition to the economic benefits for Ohio and the nation, repealing this unpopular tax is the right thing to do to stay consistent with our American values of entrepreneurship and hard work.”

The top Federal estate tax rate is currently set at 40 percent with an exemption of $5.45 million in 2016 and is leveled on the assets of a person’s estate when they pass away. Latta’s legislation also ensures that individuals are not taxed on the increased value of an estate by retaining the stepped-up basis at death.

Latta to Serve on E&C Subcommittees on Energy; Communications and Technology

Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH) has been re-appointed to the House Energy and Commerce’s (E&C) Subcommittee on Communications and Technology and Subcommittee on Energy in an announcement made by Committee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR). Latta previously served on both subcommittees in the 114th Congress, including as Vice-Chair of the Communications and Technology Subcommittee. These re-appointed positions are in addition to Latta’s new role as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection for the 115th Congress, which was announced last week.

“In addition to my new role as Chairman of the Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection Subcommittee, I welcome the opportunity to continue to help shape our nation’s energy and telecommunications policy,” said Latta. “Our country’s energy infrastructure is not only critical to our economic growth, but also our national security. I look forward to working with my colleagues to protect our electric grid and ensure that the U.S. continues to lead globally in energy production. At the the same time, I’ll continue to work on telecommunication policies that empower consumers and spur innovation — including advocating for increased broadband access in our rural communities.”

The Communications and Technology Subcommittee has jurisdiction over electronic communications, the Federal Communications Commission, emergency and public communications, cybersecurity, and privacy. The Energy Subcommittee has jurisdiction over the nation’s energy policy including fossil energy, renewable energy, nuclear energy, utility issues, as well as oversight of the Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

 Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) has re-introduced legislation for the 115th Congress that would permanently eliminate the Federal estate

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

2301

post-16491","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-general-news
"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":
["GET
