The game began with Antwerp’s Audrie Longardner picking up Rachel Williamson’s tip-off. After a turnover, the Lady Aces’ Katelyn Berenyi drove the ball down and hit a two point basket. It wasn’t long before Hicksville had a 7-0 lead over Antwerp. This game wasn’t looking so hot for the Archers. Suddenly something clicked for the 5-17 team. The Antwerp girls started scoring left and right. Annie Miesle hit 2 baskets and a free throw, and Peyton Short added a 3 point basket and two jump shots. An unbelievable turn for Antwerp, ending the first quarter 14-7.

Amazing game for Peyton Short with 21 points!

The second quarter continued the downward slide for the Aces. Shot after shot and no basket was the only result for Hicksville. Even with under-the-basket height for rebounding the ladies could not turn the momentum. Neither team had the success they pulled in the first quarter, finishing the half at 22-12.

Coming into the game the odds were in favor of the Aces, but now they were in need of a savior for this match and the third quarter didn’t help. Peyton Short laid down the law for three pointers, nailing 3 in a row and now she was up to 19 for the game. Kiana Recker and Rachel Williamson also added more to the score. Antwerp was ahead 12-33 and 5:15 left on the clock. Berenyi was able to start the ascension in the third quarter and you could feel the entire mood changing for Hicksville.

The fourth quarter was an absolutely different game. Hicksville showed up and competition was finally on the court. Antwerp’s strong lead saved them as several Aces’ stepped up to the plate, including Addison Bergman, Chelsey Taylor, and Allie Slattery. There were 3 3-point baskets scored in the fourth. Altogether Hicksville scored 20 points, almost doubling the other three quarters.

Antwerp on the other hand nearly let the game go as the Lady Aces got within three points towards the end of the match. Antwerp’s Short added another two points here with a fantastic 21 total points. In the last few minutes though Antwerp got their act together and due to the Aces fouls Antwerp, was able to add a few more points from the line with the advantage given them, taking home the unexpected win of the first game of sectionals.

Score by the Quarter:
Hicksville – 7 5 10 20=42
Antwerp – 14 8 13 14=49

Scorers of the Game:
Hicksville – Berenyi 17, Taylor 9, Bergman 8, Demland 1, Slattery 3, Schroeder 3, Siebenaler 1
Antwerp – Short 21, Williamson 10, Miesle 8, Recker 5, Braaten 4, Smith 1

The next game took Pettisville to Bryan to compete against Antwerp, the winner over Hicksville. Pettisville has only lost 1 game the whole season so it was a difficult match on Saturday, February 28 for the Archers. The first quarter added up to 0 for Antwerp while Pettisville posted 9 points with the help of two three points by Mikala Avina.

Second quarter went the best for the Archers when they earned more than the home team with 7 – 5 points and the half finished at 14-7.

The second half was just as disappointing for the Lady Archers. There were plenty of chances of hitting the free throw shots but out of 21 only 6 baskets were made. They were able to only get 6 points the entire half while the Eagles added 27 points, taking the win with the final score of 41-13 and winning the sectional championship match.

The Antwerp girls finished their 2014-2015 basketball season with a 6-18 record.

Scorers of the Game:
Antwerp – Braaten 5, Smith 4, Williamson 2, Meisle 1, Recker 1

More Pictures Here:

Antwerp Archers and the Hicksville Aces faced off in the first round of sectionals at the Bryan High School Gym

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

6,7,5
377,218,970,1617,3358,278,2132,550
post-10507","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-community","category-school","category-sports","tag-aces","tag-antwerp","tag-archers","tag-bryan","tag-girls-basketball","tag-hicksville","tag-pettisville","tag-sectionals
"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":
["GET
