EVERY THING YOU WANTED TO KNOW

Penny For Your Thoughts By: Nancy Whitaker

So many things we think we know but don’t. We are a constantly learning about things country.  Today as we surf the net, I am shocked by things I did not know. In this week’s Pennie’s, I will tell about some things I found out that I did not know.

So did you know this: Marshmallows were once made from a plant called, of course, the marshmallow plant. Early Egyptians used the Marshmallow root for medicinal purposes. It wasn’t until years later that the French played around with it and came up with the white gooey sugary fluffy candy we call marshmallows.

But, did you know animal gelatin goes into marshmallows. Bones, skin and some intestines go into commercially made marshmallows. These include parts of chicken, pigs, cows and other animal leftovers. Why? To make the collagen going into the making of marshmallows.

I don’t sit and stuff myself with boughten marshmallows but they are good in hot chocolate.

It is also said that jelly beans are coated with shellac. Is this true? You tell me.

Also those delicious red tomatoes were once thought to be poisonous and were only used as decoration.

Before erasers were invented, bread was used to erase pencil marks. This is hard to believe because if you worked and baked your own bread, who would use it as an eraser.

About rabbits: those who raise these little animals probably know all about rabbits.

Did you know that a rabbit can see behind themselves without turning their heads? Maybe that’s why they say that if you eat carrots like a bunny, you will have good eyesight.

A rabbit can jump and twist in the air and it’s called a Binky. (4Hers Rabbit raisers…have you ever seen this?). Rabbits sleep with eyes open looking out for danger. A rabbit’s heart beats twice as fast as a humans. A rabbit’s hind legs are so strong they could probably kick a predator to death.

Remember this: Catching fireflies in jars was better than any video game; Getting to ride our bikes to the end of the street was like crossing the whole country; The ice cream truck could turn a street into a stampede; Losing a shoe when playing in the mud was just part of the fun; Drinking water from the garden hose tasted wonderful.

DID YOU KNOW?

Roosters perform a dance called tidbitting to impress hens. I have never seen a rooster dance, but I have heard of The Chicken Dance. A hen can purr when they are content, similar to a cat. Some chickens enjoy sunbathing with their wings spread out. Chickens have a  social hierarchy known as Pecking order.

It is always nice to know something new, but I am not a rabbit or chicken breeder; I never used bread for an eraser; never saw a rabbit do a Binky or a rooster dance for a hen.

Did you know or seen any of these things? Let me know and I’ll give you a Penny For Your Thoughts.
