Commissioner Mark Holtsberry, a resident of Jackson Township, is seeking re-election as your County Commissioner in the May primary.

Over eleven years ago, he became a person who did not say why, but a person who said why not. Holtsberry’s goal was, and always has been, to help improve the quality of life for over the 18,000 citizens of this county. Not all his decision making is done in the office two days a week, but out of the office in after hour meetings with the boards he serves on. This reflects the commitment to the success of our citizens of all ages. Every year the Commissioner’s office has invested monies into the safety and welfare through the Sheriff’s Department, Prosecutors Office, Emergency Management, Health Department and Soil and Water, just to name a few. Holtsberry has personally donated money several times to the Parks Board. Even defending them in court from being abolished. He is not afraid to stand alone even if the odds are not in his favor. He feels by standing alone, showing conviction, people will see what the right thing to do is. The Commissioner’s office has invested monies into Economic Development and the Land Bank.

The success that the Land Bank has had in our County is very noticeable. The Commissioner’s office has the right people in the right places to get creative and make bold moves towards progress. With the use of American Relief Act monies, Holtsberry takes pride in knowing that our Court House has new energy efficient windows Broadband installed in numerous sections of the county. When other counties spend $100,000.00 dollars for studies for broadband, Holtsberry picked up a landline phone and reached out to educators for advice. Our County has seen growth through partnerships. Investing into job creation, retention and various infrastructure projects as well as projects dealing with the growth of our own various park projects.

Holtsberry’s goal of reaching out for state and federal monies to further assist in the current county programs is still in place. Our Senior Center, Parks Board, Senior Citizen Home Repair Program, Help Me Grow infant and youth program, just to name a few, have benefited from extra funding that Holtsberry has secured. His time spent with various community service programs has been very rewarding to him. He will never say no if some group wants him to speak. He is honored to be invited to speak, help out where he can, providing words of comfort or motivate others. With is conservative Christian values, which he was taught at an early age, he will continue to stand up for our citizens of our county. He is reminded what his mother told him a month before she passed away, “I taught you to be a leader, not a leaner.” It has been a wonderful pleasure to serve the citizens of this county for the past eleven years. God Bless you, our county and our country!
The post Holtsberry Seeks Re-Election, Highlights Record of Service and Community Investment first appeared on West Bend News.

The Paulding County Republican Central Committee met Thursday, April 2, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. in Paulding with Chair Laurie Lucas presiding. Members present included Cheryl Stromski, Laurie Lucas, Paul Ludwig, Jan Commers, David Burtch, Michael Strable, Matt McDougall, Mark Bennett, Shannon Ruschel, Matt Miller, Caleb Miller, and Harry Wiebe, along with several guests. Sympathy was extended to Caleb Miller and his family following the passing of his sister.

Following the pledge of allegiance and roll call, the committee moved into business with the treasurer’s report presented in Treasurer Barry Rupp’s absence. The committee approved payment of several bills, including $130 for an ad in the Paulding County Township Association Trustees Handbook, $157.75 for ad design work, and $55 for a fair trophy.

The primary action item of the evening was the appointment of a new Paulding County Prosecuting Attorney. Due to the retirement of Joseph R. Burkhardt effective February 28, 2026, the committee, as authorized under Ohio law, voted to appoint Matthew A. Miller to fill the vacancy. After the resolution was read and discussed, a motion was made and unanimously approved to appoint Miller, effective immediately. Miller will serve until a successor is elected and qualified.

In her report, Chair Laurie Lucas shared updates on recent political events, including attendance at a fundraiser for Jim Hoops. She also highlighted the upcoming Republican Women’s meeting scheduled for April 8 at Fiesta Habanero, noting that plans for the upcoming Meet the Candidate Soup and Sandwich Supper would be finalized. The April 14th “Meet the Candidate Night” will be at St. John’s Lutheran Fellowship Hall with approximately 19 candidates scheduled to attend, including multiple candidates for Secretary of State, Ohio Supreme Court, and the 9th Congressional District.

This event is just ahead of the May primary election. Members were encouraged to attend and participate in event preparations.

Under old business, the committee discussed plans for the Paulding County Fair, including tent rental, trophies, and booth setup scheduled for early June. Members agreed to pursue improvements to the party’s parade float, including potential repairs, repainting, and updated signage following the primary election.

New business included discussion of participating in the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebration. Ideas included selling themed merchandise such as flags and t-shirts at the fair and creating a Republican Party banner for use at community events.

The committee also discussed increasing public visibility by submitting regular meeting summaries to local media and posting updates on social media platforms. It was agreed that summaries would be prepared monthly to keep the public informed.

During elected officials’ reports, Board of Elections representatives provided updates on the May primary election. Early voting will begin April 7, with extended hours closer to Election Day. Due to a scheduling conflict at Wayne Trace, voting in certain precincts will be relocated to the Grover Hill VFW, with notifications being mailed to affected voters.

Commissioner Mike Weible highlighted ongoing efforts to separate Paulding County Job and Family Services from Defiance County, with a new director hired and a transition planned for completion by July 1. He also noted continued progress on a solar energy project expected to reduce county energy costs.

State Representative Roy Klopfenstein addressed ongoing discussions regarding property taxes and unfunded state mandates. He noted that while some legislative changes have been made to limit tax increases, broader reforms remain complex due to the structure of local funding and state requirements. Committee members engaged in extended discussion on property taxes, school funding, and government efficiency.

The meeting concluded with appreciation expressed for local emergency responders following recent severe weather, and members were reminded that the next Central Committee meeting will be held Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. The meeting adjourned at approximately 8:30 p.m.
The post Republican Central Committee Appoints New Prosecutor, Discusses Upcoming Events first appeared on West Bend News.

Mike Iler, a lifelong resident of Paulding County and former owner of the beloved Past Time Café, has officially announced his candidacy for County Commissioner on the Republican ticket. With a platform built on deep community roots and a passion for the county’s future, Iler aims to bring a business- minded approach to local government.

A Foundation of Service and Faith

A 1987 graduate of Paulding High School with a background in Business Administration and Management, Iler is a familiar face to many. His commitment to the community is reflected in his extensive involvement:

• Member of Divine Mercy Catholic Parish and the Knights of Columbus (St. Joseph Council).

• 35-year Associate Member of the Paulding VFW

Post 587.

• Lifetime Member of the Paulding County History Museum.

“I feel I have been truly blessed to be from Paulding County,” Iler said. “This community has given so much to me and my family, and I am ready to give back by ensuring our county remains a place where families can thrive for generations.”

Family Values and Local Dedication

Married to Marcy (Reinhart) since 1998, Mike is the proud father of four daughters who embody the spirit of service: Macy, a four-year Navy veteran; Morgan and Miranda, members of the Ohio Air National Guard 180th Fighter Wing; and Molly, a senior at Paulding High School.

Preservation and Presentation

Iler’s vision for the county centers on a “gem” that he believes sits right within the county lines: its history and natural resources. He is a staunch advocate for the work of the Park Foundation and Friends of the Park.

“Preservation and presentation are vital,” Iler noted.

“We have beautiful rivers and natural resources that offer our residents a place to relax and connect. We must protect these assets while presenting Paulding County as the premier place to raise a family.”

Recognizing the need for a forward-thinking economy, Iler’s campaign focuses on two main goals: keeping residents in the county and creating more jobs. “To grow, we need to show people why Paulding County is a hidden gem. That means bringing in more opportunities and jobs so our children and grandchildren choose to stay here and build their lives.”

*Lifelong Resident. Business Experience. Proven Dedication.
The post Mike Iler Announces Republican Bid for Paulding County Commissioner first appeared on West Bend News.

Christopher Elder declared his candidacy for State Representative in Ohio’s 82nd District, representing Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert Counties, and a portion of Defiance County. Elder is running as a Libertarian and will appear on the Primary ballot in May.

“All your freedoms, all the time. Government overreach into your personal liberties has grown rampant and unchecked; I am running to drastically scale back the role big government plays in your life.”

Why Libertarian? A main tenet of Libertarian philosophy is this: If what you do doesn’t result in a victim or the imminent threat of harming someone else, then there is no crime or reason for punishment. Therefore, it should not be subject to government regulation.

Elder is running to promote ranked choice voting, the eventual abolition of property taxes, and a return to more localized control of the government.

For the last three years, Elder has worked as a Family Teacher at the Marsh Foundation in Van Wert. He has seen the impacts government has had on families and children. A key part of the Marsh Foundation’s program is growing self-advocacy skills. As Representative, Elder hopes to passionately support the needs expressed by constituents in the district. Elder also has experience in hardware retail, information technology, and other social service organizations.

COLUMBUS – State Representatives Roy Klopfenstein (R-Haviland) and Elgin Rogers, Jr. (D-Toledo) recently introduced legislation to provide additional protections for Ohioans who volunteer to work the polls on any registration or election day.

The bill will prohibit employers from taking disciplinary action against an employee for attending training or serving as an election official. Additionally, employers will be prohibited from requiring employees to use their annual, vacation, or sick leave to perform their duties as long as they give reasonable notice of absence.

“With the gradual decrease in poll-working volunteers over the years, the time to act is now,” said Klopfenstein. “While current law provides some protections to our employees, it doesn’t go far enough.”

Current law only restricts employers from refusing to allow an employee to serve as an elected official on any registration or election day. According to the Ohio Association of Election Officials, Ohio has lost 10-15% of poll workers annually.

This bill awaits a number and committee assignment.
The post Representatives Klopfenstein, Rogers Jr. Introduce Bill to Protect Poll Workers first appeared on West Bend News.

On February 28, 2025, Ohio Representative Jim Hoops gathered with local Republicans at Fiesta Habaneros Restaurant in Paulding County, where he shared his intention to run for the Ohio Senate seat being vacated by term-limited Senator Rob McColley. Hoops, who currently serves as a representative in the Ohio House, is no stranger to public service, having previously held the position of Henry County Auditor for 13 years and been a key player in various economic development projects in Ohio.

In an informal yet candid conversation, Hoops reflected on his journey, highlighting his roots in industrial Ohio, his time playing basketball in Louisiana and Canada, and his career in both public service and business. He detailed his time working for AMP Ohio, American Municipal Power, which facilitates electric services for local communities, and his involvement in workforce development at Northwest State Community College.

“After learning about Senator McColley’s retirement, I felt it was the right time to offer my experience and leadership to the Senate,” Hoops said. He emphasized the importance of economic development and infrastructure, particularly advocating for the improvement of the US 127 exit in Cecil and the Ohio Route 49 exit at Antwerp, which he believes could significantly benefit from water and electric infrastructure upgrades.

Hoops also discussed his long-standing commitment to the community, referencing his experience working on housing programs and collaborating with both federal and state officials to bring more resources to Ohio’s border counties. He shared his desire to continue this work in the Senate, ensuring that Ohio’s residents have the resources they need to thrive.

With a strong emphasis on family and local involvement, Hoops shared personal stories, including his marriage to Deb in 1989 and their deep ties to the local community. His candidacy marks another step in a long career of public service, and he intends to continue his work for Ohio’s communities at a higher level.

The Paulding County Republicans were enthusiastic about his candidacy, expressing their support for Hoops as a strong leader ready to tackle Ohio’s challenges. As Hoops looks ahead to the upcoming election, his commitment to economic development, infrastructure, and community ties will likely resonate with voters across the region.
The post Jim Hoops Announces Senate Candidacy at Paulding County Meeting first appeared on West Bend News.

In January, four Republican women from Paulding County—Cheryl Stromski, Stacey Rinebolt, Jan Commers, and Laurie Lucas—embarked on an unforgettable road trip to Washington, D.C., to witness Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th President of the United States. The trip was filled with camaraderie, excitement, and a few unexpected challenges.

The group departed on a chilly Saturday morning, driving through Ohio and Pennsylvania to avoid the mountainous roads of West Virginia. By Saturday night, they arrived in Washington, eager to experience the historic event.

On Sunday, the women joined thousands of Trump supporters in line for a rally. The wait proved grueling, as they braved sleet, rain, and freezing temperatures for seven hours. Despite the adverse weather and chaotic crowd management, the experience was uplifting. “Everyone was talking and connecting,” one of the women shared. “It was incredible to meet people from all over the country.”

Concerns about safety arose when they entered an unsecured area near the rally venue. “It was like sardines,” they recalled, describing the lack of police or barriers. Feeling uneasy, the group decided to leave the area. They found refuge at a nearby Walgreens, where they waited for their private Uber driver—a kind Navy veteran they had befriended earlier in the weekend—to pick them up.

On Monday, the women attended a viewing party for the inauguration at a restaurant near the Washington Nationals stadium. Hosted by Michigan Republicans and representative John James, the event offered a warm and welcoming atmosphere, complete with food, non-alcoholic beverages, and a shared sense of excitement. “The energy in the room was palpable,” one attendee said. “Watching Trump take the oath of office surrounded by like-minded people was deeply emotional.”

Pictured above (back to front) are Stacey Rinebolt, Jan Commers, Laurie Lucas, and Cheryl Stromski.

The group found themselves moved to tears during key moments, including prayers led by Cardinal Timothy Dolan and Reverend Franklin Graham, as well as performances by the Marine Corps Choir and Carrie Underwood, who sang a cappella after a sound issue.

Reflecting on the trip, the women expressed gratitude for the experience and each other’s company. “It was something we’ll never forget,” said Lucas. “To be part of history, even from a distance, was incredible.”

Stacey Rinebolt agreed, “t was so exciting to meet so many people from all over the country. Everyone was dressed so patriotic and so excited about being there. It was a very fun atmosphere.”

Their journey back to Paulding County was filled with reflections on the event, camaraderie, and a renewed sense of purpose in their political engagement. For these four women, the trip was about more than attending an inauguration—it was about celebrating shared beliefs, forging connections, and creating lasting memories.
The post Four Paulding County Women Embark on Memorable Journey to Attend Donald Trump’s Inauguration first appeared on West Bend News.

Roy W Klopfenstein has been re-elected to serve a second term as State Representative for the 82nd Ohio House District which consists of Putnam, Van Wert, Paulding, and part of Defiance Counties.

During his first term, Klopfenstein served as vice chairman of the Agriculture Committee along with positions on the State and Local Government, Transportation and Infrastructure Committees. “In my second term, I will continue to work on legislation that keeps agriculture strong and vibrant as Ohio’s number one industry. Promoting agriculture and encouraging the next generation of farmers is what prompted my joint sponsorship of the Agriculture Appreciation Act which passed unanimously with bipartisanship support out of the House of Representatives”

Klopfenstein’s experience in local government gives him the insight needed to work on bills that make local government more effective and efficient. His efforts on Force Account legislation to help County Engineers was one of the first things he worked on correcting when he arrived in Columbus two years ago. This gave County Engineers more flexibility and options to manage tax dollars when bidding and managing road and bridge projects.

Klopfenstein has also been working to ensure tax dollars are used in effective and efficient manners to continue to promote current businesses while being attractive to any company to start or relocate to Ohio. “Good jobs for working families will continue to help strong and vibrant communities”, he stated.

“I deeply appreciate all the support I have received in this re-election campaign, and I will continue to work to preserve and protect the values that make the 82nd district the best place to live, work and raise a family.”
The post Klopfenstein To Serve Second Term first appeared on West Bend News.

Editors Note: These are unofficial results as posted by the Board of Elections of Paulding County Ohio, Defiance County Ohio, and Allen County Indiana.

The 2024 general election in Ohio was marked by an active electorate, with a turnout of approximately 66% based on 8,159,946 registered voters, according to state reports. This significant participation underscores the state’s engagement in both local and national matters.

Presidential Race: In a landmark decision, Donald J. Trump and JD Vance clinched the presidency with 55.23% of Ohio’s votes, demonstrating strong Republican support within the state. Their closest competitors, Democrats Kamala D. Harris and Tim Walz, garnered 43.88% of the vote, reflecting a divided but decisively leaning Republican electorate.

U.S. Senate Contest: The U.S. Senate race saw Republican Bernie Moreno narrowly defeating Democrat Sherrod Brown, taking 50.19% of the votes. This close race indicates a competitive political landscape in Ohio, highlighting the nuanced perspectives among Ohio voters.

Judicial Appointments: State judicial races also drew considerable attention, with Republicans securing positions in two out of three Ohio Supreme Court seats up for grabs this election cycle. Megan E. Shanahan and John R. Willamowski won their respective seats with a majority, solidifying conservative judicial influence in upcoming sessions.

Congressional Delegation: Ohio’s representation in Congress saw a mix of incumbents retaining their seats and some districts flipping. Notably, Republican Bob Latta maintained his position in the 5th District with 67.57% of the vote. The election results demonstrate stable partisan preferences with a strong Republican showing in several districts.

Local Measures and Tax Levies: Locally, Paulding County voters faced several tax levies, with mixed results. Notably, the proposed tax levy for the Village of Antwerp was passed with 61.73% support, reflecting local approval for municipal funding initiatives.

State Issues: On statewide measures, Ohioans voted on a pivotal issue regarding the creation of an appointed redistricting commission, with 53.78% opposing it, indicating a preference to retain a potentially more accountable electoral districting process.

Conclusion: The 2024 Ohio General Election painted a complex picture of voter priorities, with significant implications for both local governance and national policies. As Ohio continues to navigate through these decisions, the outcomes of this election will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the state’s future political, economic, and social landscape.

Local Issues and Tax Levies: Voters in Paulding County were also faced with a series of tax levies and local issues, which saw mixed results:

Several tax levies for emergency services, schools, and municipal operations were passed, reflecting community support for local funding and infrastructure.

These results indicate a strong favorability towards retaining incumbent justices, reflecting a stable trust in the judicial incumbents by the voters of Allen County. The approval of the constitutional amendment signifies a critical change in the state’s succession plan, adjusting the line of succession in case both the governor and lieutenant governor’s positions are simultaneously vacant.

Conclusion:

Allen County’s comprehensive election results illustrate a dynamic political environment with significant participation in state and local governance issues. The outcomes not only underscore a continuity in judicial leadership but also demonstrate proactive engagement by the electorate in shaping constitutional directives through referendums.

AT the local level there was not a lot of contestants but there were a few that will change the course of the political future.
