BOO!

Penny For Your Thoughts by: Nancy Whitaker

Everyone is scared of something. Whether you are a big strong guy or a fearless girl, there is fear hiding someplace. I have been a scaredy cat most of my life. One of my biggest fears is the mouse. I think that fear affected me because my mom and grandma were scared of them. I have a lot of mouse stories I could tell, and could probably list a dozen nasty experiences I have had with mice. YIKESl

I was thinking of how some fears leave us, some stay with us forever. In school days there are fears of passing a test, having friends, making a team and if that other cute girl is going to steal your boyfriend.

Girls are scared of having blackheads, bad hair days, and our weight.

Another fear of mine is doctors and dentists. When I was about 5, my mom took me to the dentist to get my 2 front teeth out as they had not loosened up yet. As soon as I got inside the dentists office I made a run for it. I ran down the hallway with mama and the dentist chasing me. I made a turn around in that hall way and ran back into the dentists office and got under the dentists desk.

Well, they got me from under the desk and into the dentists chair. And I kid you not, they held me down and yanked out those 2 baby teeth with me trying to scream. I am still scared of dentists and one night I saw my dentist at the grocery store and had a panic attack.

Some people are scared of getting a shot or the sight of blood. A shot doesn’t bother me and I can look at blood as long as it isn’t mine.

As we age we have fears of falling, being lonely and lots of families miss their kids and the life we used to have.

I recall when my brother was little he was scared of false faces. He was okay putting one on and scaring everyone, but when he took it off and saw it, he would shake and cry with fear. We were always trying to keep that mask in a buffet drawer.

Water is something else I don’t especially like to be around. I could never learn to swim and took a class called Terrified Adults. I flunked the class cause I just could not duck my head and the instructor had me quit the first lesson.

I am afraid of scary movies, birds, and chickens. I never saw my first movie till I was about 16 because my family didn’t believe in them. Well, my mom and little brother decided to walk uptown one night to see a movie. What a mistake! The movie we went to was non other than Psycho! We were so frightened and the scene where Janet Leigh got killed in the shower really stuck in our minds cause we were scared to take a shower.

In his book Play to Win, the author writes of what he calls the Four Fatal Fears:

The fear of rejection (the need to be accepted) I have always been scared people won’t like me and rejection really impacts our self esteem.

The fear of failure (the need to succeed) We all want to succeed, get a good job and be somebody.

The fear of emotional discomfort (the need to feel emotionally comfortable.

It is easy to feel emotional discomfort. I worry about everything and everybody and if it’s something that makes me upset, I tell God,”God here it is. Remove my fears and worry.”

Are you scared of anything? What is your biggest fear. Do you have any scary stories about mice or scary movies? If you do, let me know and I’ll give you a Penny for your thoughts. In the meantime I will just say BOO. AND I don’t want to be a scaredy cat.
