ADVENT

“Advent” is a significant period in the Christian liturgical calendar that marks the anticipation and preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas. It typically begins four Sundays before Christmas Day and lasts until Christmas Eve.

The word “Advent” comes from the Latin “adventus,” which means “coming” or “arrival.” This period is characterized by themes of hope, expectation, and preparation as believers reflect on both the first coming of Christ and His anticipated return. Let us not forget that Jesus is coming again. This we can be sure of.

During Advent, many Christians engage in various practices such as lighting Advent candles, using Advent calendars, and participating in special church services and traditions. Let us keep in mind that while traditions have their place, our greatest tradition is that of believing and trusting in the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was sent not to condemn the world but to save it.

Each Sunday of Advent often emphasizes a different theme, including hope, peace, joy, and love, culminating in the celebration of Jesus’ birth on Christmas Day. I will be sharing a message on each of these themes every Sunday of the Advent season at 10:15 a.m. at Paulding 1st Presbyterian Church.

In addition, Advent serves as a reminder to Christians to take time for spiritual reflection, prayer, and to cultivate a sense of anticipation and gratitude as they prepare their hearts for the Christmas season.

Perhaps it’s time to rethink Christmas. This season is more than a time for toys, gifts, and presents; although these things can be nice and make us feel good, they are temporal.

Accepting Jesus Christ and his everlasting love is the greatest gift one could ever receive or give. This season, please set aside some time to meditate on the spiritual and eternal gift of love that God has given us through His Son, Jesus Christ.

JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THIS SEASON!

Peace and love,
