A HAIRY SITUATION
Penny For Your Thoughts By: Nancy Whitaker

One of the most important parts of our grooming is fixing our hair. Trust me. I have seen and had many hair dos myself. My Mom always wore what we called a rat in her hair. She would roll her hair around this thing that looked like a stuffed piece of material. Then she took bobby pins and pinned the rat in tight. She even wore it to bed and sometimes in the mornings, the rat was on her pillow.
Now grandma had long hair down her back and to go to church she would put it in a knot on top of her head. During the week working in the house, she would braid her hair into one long pig tail.
When I got into high school it was in the 50’s – 60’s many different hair styles became popular and I wanted to be a part of it. I had a page boy, hair that was flipped up all the way around, straight hair, curly hair, blonde hair and black hair.
About this time, Elvis and his side burns came on the scene and guys would comb their hair with oil and make like a pompadour. All the guys wanted an Elvis hair style with side burns and a duck tail. These were the days of poodle skirts, sock hops, the jitter bug, the stroll, American Bandstand and girls walking arm in arm looking for a good looking guy with a car.
Meanwhile, hair spray was a top seller and the bee hive became popular. I remember teasing my hair, spraying it really stiff and making a mound of hair on the top of my head called the “bee hive”. I think lots of us gals changed hair dos as much as we changed clothes.
Of course, I got married and had 4 kids. I had 2 older daughters, then later another son and another girl.
I remember one day I came home from work and my oldest daughter had given her little brother a hair cut. Oh my! She had used scissors and cut him some bangs which were so crooked they went up the side of his head. He had to go to the barber and get it fixed.
About this time a hair style called The Poodle came into popularity. I got one along with several other women and actually all you had to do was just wash it and let those tight curls dry. Easy do.
Now I know that most guys don’t like losing their hair and having a bald head. I have seen men wearing toupees and now I see that lots of guys just shave their heads bald and it looks pretty good. It is probably easy to take care of.
Then later I decided I liked blonde hair and got my hair frosted. Then I finally got it all bleached, because you know blondes have more fun. Beauty salons are still very popular and offer many kinds of hair styles, straight or curly. As I get older, I don’t want to see wrinkles and gray hair, but it comes to all of us.
I was just wondering how the cave women wore their hair. I wonder if they washed it or tried to color it with maybe berries or roots.
Well, if you find out how cave women styled their hair, let me know and I will give you A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS.
