On Saturday, May 13th at Fremont Speedway, Skylar Gee took the checker for the second night in a row in his Winged 410 Sprint Car. He won on Friday at Attica Raceway Park, which was opening night for the two-track series sponsored by Kistler Racing Products/All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads, presented by the Baumann Auto Group. The Alberta, Canada native, Gee started the feature inside row number four. Using heavy lapped traffic, he took the lead from Stuart Brubaker who had led the race 24 laps. A caution with two laps to go in the race didn’t bother the Canadian driver and he distanced himself from the rest of the field. Behind Gee at the finish was Brubaker, Byron Reed, rookie Bryce Lucius, Chris Andrews, Travis Philo (who started from 22nd), and Duane Zablocki. The 305 Sprint feature was dominated by front row starter Paul Weaver. A late caution with two laps to go didn’t phase the defending and four-time Fremont 305 Track Champion. Weaver drove to his 72nd career win at “The Track That Action Built,” putting him third on the track’s all-time win list. Finishing behind the winner was Dustin Stroup, Bryan Sebetto, Jamie Miller, and Mike Keegan. Jamie Miller took the lead in the Burmeister Trophy Dirt Truck feature from Dustin Keegan on lap number 2, and held off several late race challenges from Cory McCaughey to score his 40th career victory at Fremont, tying him for 11th on the all-time win list with Harold McGilton. Finishing behind Miller was Cory McCaughey, H-Dan Hennig, Dave Gumby, and Curt Inks,

Area Figure 8 racing fans took the drive south to Indy last Saturday for the 75 lap Phyllis Tunny Memorial. Seasoned track veteran, Chad Sizemore found victory lane, but it wasn’t easy in heavy traffic and avoiding mishaps going through the X.  Sizemore adds this to his top division list of checkered flags that include the 1-Hour Endurance Race and Sonny Thompson Memorial 100. This was a good tune-up for him as he prepares for the $10,000-to-win Shelby Materials Late Model Spring Shootout V 90-Minute Figure 8 Endurance Race. Behind your leader was 2. Doug Greig, 3. Dana Tunny, 4. Jeffrey Shackelford, and 5. Charlie Hargraves. For my Figure 8 readers here’s how the rest of the Tunny’s finished 6. Ben Tunny, 7. Jesse Tunny, 8. Austin Tunny. If you’re not familiar with Figure 8 racing, Indianapolis Sportsdome televises their races.

This past Tuesday the $32,023-to-win Sheldon Haudenschild High Limit Buckeye Brawl came to Orrville, Ohio, and Wayne County Speedway. You would have never thought it was a school night as racing fans of all ages filled every bleacher seat in the grandstands and in the pits to watch one of the most exciting Winged 410 Sprint Car events of the spring. I was amazed to see how many of you from our area made the 90-minute trip east on a weeknight. I was happy to see and meet so many of you. Kyle Larson found the right groove during qualifying and set fast time with 14.059 in his second lap around the clay oval. The night belonged to Larson. He went on to win the feature. It was his fourth race in the High Limit Series that he helped promote last year and he finally got his first series win. Joining him on the podium Tuesday was Justin Sanders and Justin Peck. Most of these drivers stayed in the area to race with the World of Outlaws on Friday, May 19th at Attica Raceway Park. I will cover that and Eldora here next week. Keep your wheels down. Ron Out!
