All Decked Out on Clinton Street

Shared use path Sept. 2019

The following is an update regarding the progress of the Clinton Street bridge project, downtown Defiance. The $8.3 million project will completely replace the bridge which carries state Routes 15, 18 and 66 over the Maumee River. The bridge closed Feb. 25, 2019 for approximately nine months. The project is scheduled for completion July 2020.

RebarBridgeDeck

Your idea of a Friday night pour and ours may be different, but we think you’ll like our version.

Weather permitting, we will pour the deck on the Clinton Street bridge on Friday, Oct. 4.

It’s better to pour concrete late in the day because higher temperatures and humidity during the daytime hours cause concrete to set and cure faster than we like. So we expect to begin around 6 p.m. and will keep at it for 14 hours — straight.

The numbers are a bit staggering: 1,200 yards of concrete, 80 yards per hour will be placed on the bridge deck all in one night. Concrete workers — you rock!

The aesthetics of the bridge are beginning to appear. This is the lookout plaza on the north side of the bridge, featuring the classic stone pattern that you’ll see elsewhere on the structure.

Historic finds

History keeps revealing itself on this project, and it’s been fun. Some of the most recent finds, all discovered buried along the banks on the north side of the bridge.

A broken wooden wagon axle; a very intricate bicycle gear, an old silver spoon, a very large iron nail which is believed to be from the original bridge on Clinton Street, and a square nail.

All of these finds are believed to date back well into the 1800s.

Work on the shared use path has progressed nicely. The path will provide pedestrian and bicycle access beneath the bridge on the north side.

Work will occur this weekend as the effort to make up some lost time from the wet spring continues. We still plan to have traffic on the bridge in December. The project will not be complete until summer of next year.

This is an active construction project, so please remember not to wander too closely to view the construction of the bridge. Please remain behind barriers

You can always view the progress from the ODOT camera, or from the Crescent-News camera. Both are located atop Sensory Effects.

Texas Rail

Q. What will the decorative railing look like on the bridge?

A. The decorative feature on the future bridge parapet wall is referred to as Texas rail because it apparently came from Texas. The design reflects the rail featured on the 1800s version of the Clinton Street bridge.
