THE CRUMLEY BLOCK

By: Stan Jordan

What is now the Subway, years ago (1926) was the Battershell Variety Store. Then just to the right of that was Dr. Caines office, then to the right of that was the Shadow Beauty Salon. But in the mid 1930’s Hertels had a watch repair and jewelry store.

Just to the right of the building you can see part of the Petals and Vines Flower Shop, but that building is comparativley new. It was built for a drug store for Frank Smith. Now, Frank Smith was not Carl’s boy. Carl had Bud and Max, Frank and Arlie were Bert Smith’s boys. After a few years, Frank retired and that building has been a flower shop for quite a few years, with a number of owners.

When I was young, in that area, was a dry cleaner shop ran by Jim Sexton. That next shop, the Leland Smith Ins., was Jim Powers Cafe for a decade or so.

Where Papa Oley’s Pizza is, that was the post office for many years and was moved to the present location in 1968. The location where McDougall’s Firearms is, has been a lot of businesses, all the way from a bank to a dozen things and now a successful gun shop. For years the telephone exchange was upstairs.

THIS OLD HOUSE

By: Stan Jordan

We hear a lot of rumors on this house, it is just full of history and I will tell you what I know about it.

I have been told that it was built in 1886 by looking at it, to me, it’s just a little short of being a mansion.

It says on the picture that it is the home of H.K. Harris, so that tells me this picture was taken before the 1930’s as at that time Pat Harris was the local banker and he lived on the northwest corner of Woodcox and North Main Street. He lived there for years.

When I started to school in 1930 Thee Outland lived there and they had a daughter, Wanda, who was my age and they lived there till sometime in the 1950’s.

I don’t know who lived there next, but the Lyle Leinard family lived there a long time.

Now it is the home of Tim and Cindy Yenser, who own and operate the coffee shop across the street named The Genesis House.

SOME WHITE SWANS

By: Stan Jordan

This week ( the week of March 17) two men stopped in the office to tell us what they have seen (one on Wednesday and one today, Friday).

Down where 61 and 176 meet on the south side of 176 is a pond and it was covered with hundreds of white swans.

The man showed us a picture but there was a thicket between the road and the pond so the picture wasn’t very good, bu you could see those birds alright. We’re going to try and get a good one, if they stick around long enough.

Now I haven’t made it down there to see the birds yet, I dropped and broke my partial plate and spent most of Thursday getting me a new one at the dentist.

I was glad to get the reports though.

THIS GENDER NEUTRAL STUFF

By: Stan Jordan

There is a family in Orlando, Florida that has a baby named Sparrow and they are raising the child as gender-neutral. That means the child will decide what he/she is later. Even the birth certificate is not marked.

From the outside looking in, I don’t agree or like this stuff. They don’t even dress the child in a certain color, they are opposed to that. What is wrong with growing up as a child, not a “thing.” It is called a “theyby.”

Most American, everyday, working tax paying people when they have a child and it has all its fingers, toes, etc…are tickled to death and are happy as can be and they want to raise the child like they were raised and cultured.

I don’t agree with raising a child like that. I can see that can turn into child abuse. Let a child be a child, grow up and enjoy those years being a normal  kid. Lots of times a kid that isn’t “normal” gets picked on and can lead a miserable life. Sooner or later it will get out that she/he isn’t quite like every other child in that respect. I’m sure those people have been reading a book written by some professor on child raising.

I’m in for raising your child like you were, the old fashioned way: a boy or a girl. And in school, help guide them and let the school help them find their abilities.

I think these people are making a mountain out of a mole hill. Let the child grow up as nature bids.

There are only two types of people born into this world, boys or girls. I guess you can deviate from there.

NEW SCHOOL BUS LAWS

By: Stan Jordan

I know that it’s not my affair, but the new laws they are considering over in Indiana about the school bus passing, does not go far enough.

To me, no child should have to cross a busy road or street to get on or off a school bus. I think that should be a law all over and maybe some discussion with a local school board about some rural roads.

The laws we have now about passing school buses, don’t work. They are not stiff enough. I think we should go all the way and pick up every child at the curb, yes it would cost more, but as this would be nationwide, get the funds from the government by the way of a few cents extra on the gasoline tax, nationwide.

No more of this killing a school child by a driver not paying attention to his/her driving.

A boy was attending his first wedding. After the ceremony a cousin asked him, “How many women can a man marry?”

“Sixteen” the boy responded.

“Well how do you know that?”

“That’s easy. All you have to do is add ‘em up. Like the preacher said, 4 better, 4 worse, 4 richer, 4 poorer.”

The teacher asked Jose’ how to spell water?

Jose’ said, “H I J K L M N O”

The teacher asked, “How did you get that?”

“Well you said water was H2O.”

The old man said, “I’m not old, just matured.”

An old cowboy walks into a barbershop for a shave and a haircut.

He tells the barber he can’t get all his whiskers off because his cheeks are wrinkled from age. The barber gets a little wooden ball for a cup on the shelf and tells the old cowboy to put it inside his cheek to spread out the skin.

When he’s finished, the old cowboy tells the barber that was the cleanest shave he’d had in years, but he wanted to know what would have happened if he had accidentally swallowed that little ball. The barber replied, “Just bring it back in a couple of days like everyone else does.”

THE EQUINOX

By: Stan Jordan

My co-worker, Jarrison Steiner, took a few minutes off today and told me all about this equinox stuff. It happens twice a year, about the same days each year. In September and March, generally around the 20th, 21st or the 22nd of these months.

That is when the earth swings back and forth and on that specific day the earth is in balance. This is how they figure Easter Sunday, it is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox, which is in March. The equinox in September is called the autumnal equinox.

As I understand, the Stonehenge Relic Park in southern England is made around these happenings.

THAT FIASCO IN WASHINGTON

By: Stan Jordan

Big hairy deal! It is over! That political drama lasted over 22 months and cost over 25 million bucks. The underside of that is, with that over 500 workers down there, very little governing was done.

They knew when they started that they could not indict the president. That is in the book. If they would have some thing on him, he could pardon himself anyhow.

Those people must think the common Americans are dumb to put on a fiasco like that. Of course if the president would not have pulled those shenanigans, all that crap would not have come about.

Well, I guess that is politics, what do I expect?
