The Antwerp High School wrestling team recently competed in the sectional tournament at Archbold High School on February 22-23, 2019. Of the 6 wrestlers competing, 3 were able to place in the top 4 of their respective weight classes, thus earning them a spot in next week’s District tournament at Lakota High School on March 1 & 2. Placing 4th for the Archers was senior Tanner Wentland in the 145 pound weight class. Wentland finished the tournament with 3-2 record, earning 2 pins along the way. This marks the 1st time in his career qualifying for the District tournament.

Going undefeated for the tournament and winning sectional titles were senior Aidan McAlexander at 120 pounds and junior Randall Mills at 126 pounds. This marks the first time in program history that Antwerp has crowned 2 champions at the sectional tournament. McAlexander was 2-0 with 1 major decision to earn the 2nd sectional title of his career. Mills ended his tournament 4-0 with 1 pin and 1 major decision. He also avenged an earlier season loss to Drew Helmke of Tinora to earn the first sectional title of his career. Both McAlexander and Mills have each qualified for the district tournament 3 times as well, which ties an Antwerp wrestling record with former Archer wrestler Jarret Bute. This year’s squad also tied a program record by getting 3 wrestlers to the district tournament. If any wrestler is able to place in the top 4 this coming weekend at Districts, they will earn themselves a spot in the state tournament on March 7-9 in Columbus. We wish you the best as you prepare for your state tournament run. Good luck and GO ARCHERS!
