Stan’s Ramblings

WHAT A WEEKEND

By: Stan Jordan

The weekend of October 20th & 21st I will remember for some time. Woe is me, I don’t know where to start, some good and some not so.

Friday was a fine day, Kenny and Nick finished combining the corn. The Antwerp High School football team won their game and that runs their record up to 6 and 3. That is pretty darn good, because two or three years ago they almost dropped the sport of football.

On Saturday night, the Ohio State Buckeyes didn’t fare so well as the Purdue team beat them badly. Purdue had the best team on the field, the Bucks were out played. On Saturday, the wind blew hard and put a lot of limbs down in my back yard. But, I understand over in Northern Indiana, thousands of people were without power because of the storm.

My pick of the baseball team for the World Series, The Brewers of Milwaukee, got beat, badly. I am a National League man, but I don’t care much for the Dodgers. I will watch the series alright, but without much care who wins. My teams, the Reds and the Indians didn’t have a chance. Well, the Indians had a good record, but the Astros swept them. Woe is me!

THE BASEBALL SEASON

By: Stan Jordan

Yes, the baseball season is over! Each team plays 160 games in the regular schedule, then if they’re good, they play five games a couple times in the playoff and then four out of seven in the World Series.

Boston won 108 games in the regular season, that is some kind of record, they were that good. Then in the playoffs they won three more and then four more wins in the World Series. They played the Los Angeles Dodgers in the series and beat them four out of seven.

The Dodgers had a good team, but the Red Sox were better. Their pitcher shut down the Dodgers’ hitters, it was a good series and it went about the way that all the fans thought it would. The Red Sox should reign again next year.

I watch baseball on the television and I will surely miss it. Maybe I will watch Paw Patrol.

Joey Bosa

By: Stan Jordan

This column is about Joey Bosa, the older brother of Nick, and both of those boys were very good football players for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

The Bosa boys’ father, John Bosa, was a 1987 draft first pick from Boston College, by the Miami Dolphins. He is the great grandson of Chicago mobster, Tony Accardo.

The following is from Wikipedia and it shows how good Joey Bosa was. He played for the Buckeyes 3 years and then went to the NFL.

Bosa attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was rated by Rivals.com as a four-star recruit and was ranked as the fourth best defensive end in his class.Bosa committed to play college football at Ohio State University in April 2012.

As a true freshman in 2013, Bosa started 10 of 14 games, recording 44 tackles and 7.5 sacks. He was named a freshman All-American by the Sporting Newsand College Football News. In 2014, Bosa was named a Unanimous First Team All-American, becoming the 27th Buckeye in 84 years to do so. He finished his sophomore year with 13.5 sacks on 55 tackles.

Bosa missed the first four weeks of the season due to a hamstring injury. On October 9, Bosa made his regular season debut against AFC West rival Oakland Raiders. Although Bosa only played 27 snaps, he finished the game with two sacks, a hit, and four hurries. The following game against the Denver Broncos, he had one quarterback hit, five hurries, and a stop while also drawing double teams throughout the game.[ Bosa was named Defensive Rookie of the Month for October. Despite being limited to 12 games, Bosa finished his rookie year with 41 tackles, 10.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. He was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Bosa was ranked as the 100th best player in the league by his peers on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2017.

THUMBNAIL LOOK AT COFFEE

By: Stan Jordan

We hear all kinds of reports on you and coffee, some good and some bad. I guess to drink coffee is one of my civil rights and I take advantage of it. I drink coffee all day, for any reason or no reason at all. I also like hot tea but this line is on coffee. I have drank coffee all my life. We had coffee at home as far back as I remember.

The world has had coffee since the 15th century, it originated in Ethiopia and the surrounding countries.

The earliest evidence of coffee drinking appears in Yemen in Southern Arabia in the Sufi monasteries. It was here in Arabia that coffee seeds were first roasted and brewed in a similar way that it is done now.

As of 2016, Brazil is the leading grower of coffee beans. Providing one third of the world total and it is one of the major exports.

I have heard and read that drinking coffee is not good for you. I have also read that people who drink coffee live longer. So believe what you want to believe. The medical people say that there is no connection between coffee and cancer.

They say that people like to drink many cups of coffee each day, and live longer. You might say that I am a living example of that, because I consume many cups of coffee each day and I will probably continue.

SENIOR FOLKS BREAKFAST AT THE SCHOOL

By: Stan Jordan

This is Thursday, October 25, 2018, I attended breakfast at the Antwerp High School, it was sponsored by the Antwerp Exchange Bank. We had a fine breakfast of biscuits and gravy, potato cake and fruit, all prepared by Mrs. Altic and her helpers and we were served by the students of the Honor Society. Everything was fine.

Then we were entertained by the Show Choir and dancers. This group of boys and girls are under the supervision of Mrs. Mary Smith. Then the high school band, under the direction of Ms. Newell, came and played a number of good moving tunes and ended up with the Antwerp High School Fight Song. You talk about memories, the old timers stood right up like they were young again.

Then Dr. Miller, the high school superintendent, talked a few minutes on the workings of the school, inside and outside. There is just a lot going on. He talked about the structure and the repair, as the school is 15 years old now. He talked about the academic field, the sports fields and all that’s going on with that and what is yet to be done in that area.

He also said that they will make a fitness trail around the school grounds. Oh there is just a lot going on out at the school complex. We surely enjoyed ourselves and we thank the school administration for the nice morning.

THE SCHOOL BUS

By: Stan Jordan

The longer I sit at this desk and think and talk about this terrible accident over in Fulton County, Iniana, where a lady driving a pick up truck struck and killed three children crossing the state highway, the more upset I get.

This should have never happened. There is a lot of people to blame for this accident besides the driver.

Right off the bat, there should be a law that on state and busy highways, the school kids do not have to cross the road to get to the bus. The route should be changed to accomplish this. Accidents do happen and let’s see that this is the last one of this type.

We can spend millions of dollars each day to drop on a desert over in Asia in the form of shells and bombs, we can make the school bus route safer for the kids.

Those people in the state capital and Washington should start using their head, protect the school kids, not the Rio Grande.
