Calling all U. S. military veterans – The Huber Canteen wants you!

In conjunction with the upcoming “Huber Canteen: A USO WWII Tribute to Our Troops” event, photos of military veterans or active duty service members are needed to be displayed on the Huber Canteen’s Wall of Honor.

The Huber Canteen will recreate the 1940s Hollywood Canteen which opened its doors to over 4 million servicemen during its three year existance. The Canteen provided an evening of hospitality and entertainment Hollywood style, with stars volunteering their time and talents to give servicemen a memorable and relaxing respite from the pressures of a world war.

One of the Hollywood Canteen’s features was the Wall of Honor featuring 8×10 photos of service members. The Huber would like to feature a similar Wall of Honor and is requesting  photos of veterans and active duty service personnel. Photos (8×10 preferred but other sizes accepted) can be mailed to The Huber Opera House and Civic Center, 157 E. High St., Hicksville, OH 43526, before January 31, 2019. Please include serviceman’s name, branch of service and city.

The Huber Canteen event on Saturday, February 9, 2019, will feature a 6:30pm USO style dinner theatre for 100 catered by Keppeler’s Country Corner of Edgerton along with refreshments by Two Bandits Brewing Company. The Canteen hopes to offer approximately 30 free dinner tickets to veterans. Sponsors are being sought to defray the ticket costs. Anyone interested in sponsoring tickets may contact The Huber Opera House and Civic Center (419-542-9553). A contest will be held in December to determine the dinner ticket winners.

The USO WWII Tribute to Our Troops will follow the dinner at 7:30pm. General admission tickets will include Hollywood style musical selections and 40s era star  appearances by members of the Opera Lane Performers. The 1940s jazz ensemble “Big Band Sound”  will be featured along with numbers by The Fort Wayne Ballroom Company and Summit City Music Theatre.

Huber Canteen is a fundraising event with proceeds going towards Honor Flight Organization of Northwest Ohio and Northeast Indiana and the Huber Opera House inside wall repairs. Two Bandits Brewing Co. of Hicksville, and Garmater’s Trucking, are participating sponsors for the event.

Watch for upcoming information on the veteran dinner ticket contest in December. To sponsor or reserve tickets contact the Huber Opera House and Civic Center.
