The Old Wabash Depot

By: Stan Jordan

This picture is from the Ted Mendez collection, and little Ted is in the arms of his mother, if you look close.

This picture was taken in 1953. The photographer was standing on Cleveland Street and looking east. You can see the Old East Elevator that was torn down. Then also, you can see our first water tower which was built in 1930 and was replaced because the new Weatherhead Plant needed more water.

The depot was moved in 1972 up on West River Street by the railroad. Then a few years later a grant was secured and that old classic depot serves as a couple of business offices for the city.

Kluber Wins 20th Game

By: Stan Jordan

Corey Kluber of the Cleveland Indians won his 20th game of the season last night, September 24, 2018. In baseball that is a special goal for pitchers and a lot of fellows don’t reach it. He has won the Cy Young Award a couple of times and has had a good won/lost record for a few years.

Last night at the stadium of the Chicago White Sox, both pitchers had their good stuff. It went up to the 7th inning with no score yet. In the 7th, Geyer of the Indians hit a home run and that put the Indians on top. The Indians picked up to three more runs and won the game 4 – 0.

Corey had eleven strike outs last night and over 200 K’s for the season. He was in good control all night. I hope he stays hot for the rest of the season.

This is Progress?

By: Stan Jordan

I was born in 1924 and I can remember pretty good from 1929 on. There has been an awful lot of water go under the bridge since then and a lot of changes in our life styles, some of it good, some of it questionable.

At that time we ate all of our meals at the kitchen table and for relief we had a path out through the back yard and a two-holer at the end of the path. Now-a-days that would be considered archaic, but it sufficed. Back in 1941 and those years, we played high school basketball in boys short shorts and the girls played sports in one piece, something that went clear down to their knees. Now the girls play volleyball in very short shorts and the boys wear some gear that flop around clear down to their knees.

Now we eat our meals outdoors in the yard or on the patio and we use the necessary room in the house. Women wore a lot of lacey petticoats and dresses that fell to the ground, they were that long. Now the ladies don’t wear very much and it fits pretty tight.

Drugs, Drugs

By: Stan Jordan

Drugs, that is all you see, read or hear about anymore and really, I’m tired of it. I think there is too much allowance for it in our court system. Sometimes when there is an accident, you hear, “well maybe drugs were involved” that seems to be an excuse.

I am against most any and all illegal use of any drug – factory or home made.

I think it is time to stop this molycoddling of drug users, sellers and makers. Let’s get a big broom and clean house. Let’s clean house from the bottom up. From the user up to the top.

A couple of issues ago in the West Bend News it showed our Sheriff Landers with a new tester unit to make it possible for the policeman or trooper to be able to tell if the product the perpetrator has is toxic, poison or worse.

To have a society that will stoop that low as to carry poisonous drugs and against a policeman or an opponent is flat out unacceptable. This drug bit has gone too far and it is time to stop. In the city a user can get a good new clean noodle for free, just for the asking. Now that is one of the dumbest thing that I have ever heard in this drug war. I don’t care if they die of infection, overdose or any drug related usage.

Our local police and other law enforcement people do a good job of bringing in the users and all of those bad guys, but it is to no avail as they go nearly scot-free with no or not much penalty from the courts.

I know this is all old stuff but I mean all of it. This stuff has to stop.

Van’s Report

By: Stan Jordan

Our fine United Parcel man is Van Hanenkratt and has been for years. He lives over in Auglaize Township, but he delivers to our West Bend News nearly everyday.

He is a good delivery man and spends a lot of his off time on the river and reports to me very often. On his last outing with the canoe he spotted some otters, beaver, squirrels and an eagle. Just a good report on our wildlife, but for the last 2 – 3 weeks he has been on alert for a pileated woodpecker and he hasn’t seen or heard one.

This is a bad time to see woodpeckers or any wildlife because of the leaves.

I have reports of seeing the pileated woodpecker in the Paulding area pretty regular but no report from Van or the Auglaize area, they seem to be wide spread.

Van was in the office today and he was talking about seeing a golden eagle the other day along the Auglaize River. He has seen that eagle before and you can tell the difference from a bald eagle that is the kind we see around the Maumee area.

Van was telling about how this eagle tried to catch another bird in flight but he missed and the other bird escaped. Now that don’t happen very often.
