Archers come up short to Blackbirds

DEFIANCE – Pettisville limited Antwerp to 7 total field goals and kept the Archers from getting into any type of offensive rhythm as the Blackbirds posted a 32-17 victory in Division IV girls sectional basketball action at Defiance High School Saturday afternoon.

The Blackbirds opened an 8-6 advantage after 8 minutes of action before Pettisville scored 4 of the 5 second quarter points to push the margin to 12-7 at the intermission.

Quarter #3 saw the Blackbirds take control, though, as Pettisville picked up 17 points compared to 5 for the Archers in grabbing a 29-12 lead at the end of 3 quarters.

Heather Oberlin paced the Lady Archer efforts with 9 points while Karsyn Brumett added a 3-pointer for Antwerp, which wraps up the season at 15-9.

Hope Smith and Chelsea Johanns each picked up a basket and Rachel Williamson had 1.

Morgan Leppelmeier and Elizabeth Beck both had 9 points to lead the Blackbirds. Kendal Pursel and Sami Tilley each posted 4 markers while Mikayla Graber, Nichole Foor and Brandi Schnitkey picked up 2 points apiece for Pettisville, which moves to 13-10 on the year.

The Blackbirds now face another Paulding County squad as Pettisville plays Green Meadows Conference champion Wayne Trace Thursday at 6:15 p.m. at Archbold High School.

Five girls donned the Archer uniform for the final time on Saturday.

Kortney Smith, Amanda Roberts, Hope Smith, Ashley Miller and Sabrina Thomas-Vankirk all saw their girls basketball careers end in a Lady Archer uniform.
