The Lady Aces travelled to the Antwerp home court on Friday, January 19. The program was set up for the veterans by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. They set this date for the schools in Ohio to honor the veterans in their community. Athletic Director, Drew Altimus, scheduled everything with the men and women of the military and the media. The school brought in these honored people in front of the community event to share with all in attendance!

After the ceremony, the the game started and Antwerp struggled from the get-go! The girls just couldn’t get the ball in the basket, while the Aces kept the whole thing under control when Addison Bergman scored nearly half her points in the first period. Antwerp only scored 1 point by Hope Smith on a foul shot.

The Archers were able to make a massive comeback in the second when the Rachel Williamson sunk 3 – 3-point baskets and a 2 point field goal – all her points for the game. Antwerp sophomore, Heather Oberlin, was fouled several times and hit over 60% of her free throws. Smith was also back at the line with hitting 2 more free throws. On the Aces’ side, Antwerp kept their score down to only 12 points. A 3-pointer by Emily Sanders did help! The half ended at 20-21 and now the game was close!

Both teams were on fire to try and win this match. After all … Hicksville defeated the Antwerp in the route 49 tournament quite easily. Would this game be different? In the third quarter, Antwerp outscored the Aces and put them in the lead to take the game from the Aces.

The fourth quarter closed in under pressure and fouls. Junior, Emily Sanders, hit 2 free throws late in the game to lift the Hicksville Aces to a 41-40 victory over Antwerp in Green Meadows Conference girls basketball action Friday night.
