Raider Wrestlers Improve

“After a somewhat disappointing showing in Defiance last week at the Tri State Border Wars tournament, it was imperative that we improve as a team,” stated Clemens. The Raider’s Hunter Showalter and Tyler Bauer were the only wrestlers to reach the podium in the 43-team tourney last weekend.

Missing three wrestlers from the lineup, the Raiders were able to improve at the Troy Invitational placing 10 individual wrestlers and capturing fourth place as a team.  They were able to add valuable bonus points by capturing 24 pins to help offset the missing wrestlers.

All wrestlers would finish a match with a pin, led by Hunter Showalter’s four pins.  Gabe Sutton, Kameron Bevis, Nate Showalter, and Noah Reel would all notch three wins with pins on the day.

H. Showalter would be the highest podium placer capturing a runner up finish.  Tyler Bauer and Gabe Sutton would both finish in third on the day. However, the biggest surprise would be Nate Showalter. N. Showalter would upset the number one seeded wrestler and go on to finish with his first ever podium finish in third place.

Wayne Trace would have two heavy weights competing on the day and both would finish on the podium. Jacob Graham would finish in third and Noah Reel would finish in fifth place.

Kameron Bevis would wrestle in his first tournament action of the year and place fourth for the Raiders. Bevis would also notch his first pins of the season.

Jess Munger, Wyatt Stabler, and Eli Moore would round out the remainder of the podium finishers. All three wrestlers would garner sixth place honors.

“We needed to refocus our efforts. I wanted the team to get back to the basics and we drilled on that all week.  Nothing fancy or flashy, just aggressive wrestling. All of them looked much better this weekend, and with the inexperience, we have on this team, that means the work payed off in practice this week. With a young team you always need improvement, but we improved a lot over our performance last weekend,” finished Coach Clemens.

Wayne Trace JH Wrestling Results

Last year the Wayne Trace Junior High wrestling team finished their season undefeated, only the second time in history. This year, with a fourteen man squad, there are only four boys returning to the team. “We have ten new members of the wrestling team this year, only a few of them wrestled at the biddy level, all others this is a new experience for them. The team works hard and we are improving every day, we still have a lot of work to do, hoping to get a few of the boys their first win. It’s exciting to see the boys improve, I hope all of them continue wrestling on to the high school level.” Coach Rob Long explained.
