The Allen County Soil and Water Conservation District is looking for participants for the Phosphorus Risk Reduction Program. Grant funds provided to the SWCD from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management are available to participants in the project on a per acre basis.
If you have farm land in the Upper Maumee targeted watersheds Black Creek, Marsh Ditch, Six-Mile Creek, Trier Ditch, and Bottern Ditch, you may be eligible to participate in this project.
This pilot program is designed to help farmers keep phosphorus on their fields. The main factors that determine a farm’s risk of losing phosphorus from their fields include soil type, how close or connected field is to a body of water, the slope and soil permeability of the field, soil Phosphorus test results, amount of fertilizer applied, time of fertilizer application, and fertilizer placement.
While some of these factors cannot be controlled by producers, those that can provide good opportunity to make small changes that could result in big improvements both for the bottom line, and for water quality.
Producers may be eligible for reimbursement payments for applied conservation practices such as cover crops, blind inlets, and more.
