Vantage Board Meeting MINUTES

Vantage January Board Meeting Held

The Vantage Board of Education held the 2019 Tax Budget hearing and Organizational meeting prior to the the January Regular Board meeting on Thursday, January 11, 2018 in the District Conference room.

No Board Action required. During the Regular Board meeting, Minutes from the December 7, 2017 regular Board meeting were approved along with financial statements for the month of November, 2017.

Superintendent Rick Turner thanked each Board of Education member for their time and dedication to Vantage, as well as associate school. It takes a real commitment to serve on a school Board, and each member serves on two Boards of Education, and we thank them for their service. Superintendent Turner updated the Board of the preparations to meet with the legislators in Columbus next week, one the major issues we will discuss are the options for obtaining a high school diploma for the classes beyond 2018. They created two additional options for the class of 2018, one of which specifically targeted career technical students. We will ask them to keep these two additional options. The feedback we are getting is that this is likely to happen, but we will see what their responses are next week. Additionally, Superintendent Turner will talk with the legislators about the continuing to work with ODE to create a viable teacher education program for Career Technical Instructors, given that SB3 removed the RESA requirement for them. We will also encourage our legislators to support language that recognizes OTC’s as Institutions of Higher Learning. High School Director Tony Unverferth reported the the Ottoville VFW was presented with a check for $185.00 at their December meeting from the Vantage Student Ambassadors flag field effort (in honor of Veteran’s Day). Members of the organization expressed a great deal of gratitude, and even gave us a “gift” to share with all those involved. Director Unverferth also reported that the Construction Equipment Technologies program has been shadowing Weigand Construction at the new Van Wert County Hospital Outpatient and Ambulatory Care Center. The students are able to see first hand how beams are set, concrete is formed and poured, and how the site work is performed. Electricity and Industrial Mechanics Instructors recently attended a three day seminar on Programmable Logic Controls (PLC’s), held at Tri-Rivers Career Center and part of the RAMTEC initiative. Both instructors are now certified to teach the PLC curriculum in their programs. Lastly, Sophomore Visit Day is on February 2. Close to 800 sophomores from our 13 associate schools will be coming to visit Vantage Career Center. This gives them the opportunity to shadow and receive hands on training in two programs, one hour each, to determine if they would like to pursue these labs for their junior and senior year. Ohio Technical Center Director Pete Prichard updated the Board that the CDL program has started another class on January 8 and ACCSC will approve the LPN program at their February meeting. We anticipate classes to begin on April 8, 2018. Director Prichard also reported that the Van Wert Economic Development Director, Stacy Adam, hosted a stakeholders group regarding the Manufacturing Consortium, which was created by Vantage Career Center and NSCC. The Stakeholders assist in

developing the structure and mission of the consortium. There has been discussion of expanding the scope of the group in order to meet the needs of the community.

Superintendent Rick Turner reported that Monday of this week, Mr. Germann resigned his seat(Work Conflicts) on the Vantage Board of Education and the Lincolnview Board formally accepted his Vantage resignation Monday evening. School safety is on everyone’s mind. We are so appreciative of our area law enforcement agencies, they have been very supportive through recent events and have stepped up their presence on our campus. This is a practice that will continue as we move forward. We   have also reached out to our statewide Career Center Superintendents’ Association to begin the sharing of best practices among career centers throughout Ohio. We as career center Superintendents are also in the beginning stages of planning professional development sessions at our annual spring and summer conferences. Career Centers have some unique issues relating to campus safety, and we want to utilize all resources available. Additionally, we will work closely with our Vantage member schools to ensure communication is open and best practices are shared among us and implemented as appropriate. This will continue to be a work in progress. Pete Prichard was also thanked for 18 years of service to the Vantage district.

Vantage High School Director Tony Unverferth’s written report mentioned that FFA week was held at Vantage February 20-23. The Vantage FFA Chapter raised money through several different programs throughout the week, including a “Pie in the Face” of one of their officers, conhole tournament, and a jeans day. The students (led by Mr. Mike Miller) took the events very seriously and have not only raised money for their cause, but also positive awareness of what FFA’s value and standards mean to everyone around them.
