WBESC GOVERNING BOARD MEETING Minutes 11/18/15

The Western Buckeye ESC Governing Board held its regular monthly Board meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at the Van Wert ESC office. Board President Mr. Billy Poe II welcomed Board members and school personnel to the meeting. Treasurer Kim Jones reviewed the current financial reports, investments and the monthly expenditures with the Board. Superintendent Brian Gerber updated the Board on the current status of the ESC. He also shared a 21st Century Grant update with the Board of Education. Mr. Gerber commended Grant Coordinator Ashley Shepherd and her staff on the outstanding work the 21st Century program is providing the schools and students that were awarded the grant. Our 21st Century program sites at Wayne Trace Jr./High School, Paulding Elementary, Oakwood Elementary, Antwerp Elementary and Lincolnview Elementary are successfully licensed through the Ohio Department of Education and fully staffed with certified teachers. We are near or exceeding capacity at all of our sites, two of our elementary sites have waiting lists. We are currently looking into the possibility of partnering with Defiance College for their education students to volunteer and earn practicum hours by assisting our staff with small group tutoring and homework help.  A large portion of our after school program is focused on providing academic supports for students, however staff also builds in opportunities for college and career readiness activities and youth development. The students at WTHS recently took a tour of the Paulding County Jail and met with Sheriff Landers about what it takes to be in law enforcement. Paulding Elementary students wrote letters thanking local veteran’s for their service. The letters were shared at the Elementary Veteran’s Day program. Oakwood students volunteered to rake leaves for a family in need of assistance. Antwerp Elementary hosted their first Family Math Night entitled, “Wild for Problem Solving.” Families rotated math stations that required them to practice estimation, logic and strategy. Lincolnview Elementary students recently enjoyed a canvas painting class with a local artist. This program is very beneficial to the students in our area. We are fortunate to have this resource within Western Buckeye ESC. It takes dedicated hard working staff members to make this program successful. We certainly have those high quality staff members in place to serve our students via the 21st Century Grant.
