Trooper Injured When Motorist Strikes Patrol Car

sheriff police badgeMELROSE– A Trooper assigned to the Van Wert Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol was one of two injured when a vehicle struck a marked patrol car while the Trooper was assisting a stranded motorist.

On October 19, 2015 at approximately 11:26 am, Ray J. Mullins, 79, of Oakwood, was driving east on State Route 613 near County Road 187 in Paulding County when his vehicle struck the stationary patrol car and one of the other stationary vehicles that was waiting on a tow truck to arrive.

Trooper Jared J. Miller was transported to Paulding County Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries as a result of the patrol car being struck from behind while rendering aid to the two vehicles on State Route 613. Additionally, Lauren C. Teague, 24, of Fort Wayne, was transported for minor facial injuries she sustained when her vehicle was struck by Mr. Mullins’ vehicle. The emergency lights on the patrol car were activated and visible from both directions when the crash occurred.

Alcohol or drugs are not considered to be a factor in the crash. Mr. Mullins was seat belted and was treated at the scene by Oakwood EMS for a small cut to his chin. No charges have been filed, as the crash is still under investigation.
