The Den at Van Wert High School played host on Tuesday, March 10 to the OHSAA District games between the Sectional Champions from the first week of March. Oddly enough, they were all from the Green Meadows Conference.

The first game was between the Hicksville Aces and the Edgerton Bulldogs. This game could have gone either way as it was a tight match from beginning to the end. Jonny Giesige was tops in the first half for the Aces while Max Nihart was for Edgerton. Three-pointers were both in their favor. At this point in the competition, the Bulldogs were able to spread their points across the roster instead of with a stand-out player. The half ended with 19-15 with the SR 49 north team in the lead.

Hicksville came back from half-time with their cards on fire. They outscored Edgerton in every way, led by Logan Thiel by 2.5x. With Hicksville taking back the game, the fans for Hicksville were cheering so loud a person could not hear what was happening. The third ended with Hicksville in the lead 24-27.

In the fourth quarter, Hicksville started well and continued their run, but it was short-lived when Mitchell Cercone nailed 2, 3-point shots in a row. Both sides were fired up now and the gym was literally very hot.

What could have changed the game for either team is the foul shots. Hicksville posted only a 43% approval while Edgerton hit 61%. It was over-time that put Edgerton at the higher percentage. Before, that seemed a challenge to put in free shots.
With Edgerton tying the game in the last 20 seconds, and the Aces not able to push ahead, the game went into over-time at 35 each.

Over-time increased the tension in the stands. Everyone was standing and the gym was in an uproar. Edgerton had the momentum and Hicksville was doing what it could to change the game back to their favor. It didn’t help when Hicksville had two fouls called on them with one being a technical on coach Tony Tear. Edgerton got the chance to shoot 6 uncontested baskets in a row.

The fouling didn’t save the Aces in the fifth quarter, instead it gave the game to the Bulldogs. Final score was 49-46 and Edgerton will take on the Raiders on Friday, March 13 at 7 pm.
